I'm use to stripping and painting tin plate. I tried painting a MTH passenger car once and the printing came through no matter what I did. Will I have the same problem with this Lionel tender? If so what is the trick. I'm thinking of painting the engine light blue and this or repaint the engine and this light gray ( which the engine is already ) but to get them to match I would repaint the engine with same paint as I use for this tender.

Try using a dremel with wire brush #535-02 attachment at lower rpm's and use that to remove the printing/lettering.

I know there are some Lionel items that are heat-stamped, but for the decal/printed lettering try wet/dry sanding plus high-build primer and you may have some success. I removed my Lionel 2-8-2 tender lettering by scrubbing with q-tips and rubbing alcohol, applying a new decal directly over the area. I probably should've pre-painted the tender sides as some rub-marks are visible.

Take the body off and prime and or paint the inside and see if it bleeds through. That may give you a good idea if the paint your using will work.

What bled thru was the lettering not the painting thru thru the shell
