In the G scale world, everyone seems to hang onto the boxes their trains and cars and track came in for later. What do you all do? I don't seem to have enough room for both my trains and their boxes.
Thanks

Well, it seems in the world of collecting, having the original box is a Very Big Deal, which is pretty directly reflected in the resale pricing. So, I'd say that, for any items you (or your heirs!) have any chance of selling on, it probably would be best to retain the original packaging. OTOH, if your acquisitions are made solely for your own use and you have no convenient way to store the packaging, just toss it, and enjoy your trains!

I do keep everything it its original box if it came in a box. Does make for easy stacking on shelves.

I keep boxes for the premium brands (Lionel, MTH, Willaims, D56, Brooklin), but I don't for most of the rest such as Menards. Most are under the layout, but I also have 2 large shipping boxes and a storage shelf bull of smaller boxes. I figure if we move or if I need to sell stuff off, it is better if I have the boxes.

I keep all the original boxes including the shipping cartons. They get stored in my attic. My collection is not that big so I have enough room.

I just threw out a bunch of them because I couldn't match them to any rolling stock. I organize what I have by manufacturer.

I have all my boxes. This past Thanksgiving I paid the oldest 4 grandchildren (9, 12, 14 and 16) $20 each to carry all the empty boxes from upstairs under the layout to the basement and put them by Manufacturer and in numerical order on shelving. Took them one complete day. The worse boxes are Menard's and Woodland Scenic. The plastic is flimsy and bulky. Now I can finally get under the layout again. Even found some full boxes under there. They are still upstairs till I get them on the layout or shelves. Now I am in he process of checking my inventory program with empty boxes. Found a few I did not have in inventory.

I would agree that boxes are worth keeping to store equipment in, and to uphold resale value. If you can, nestle the boxes inside one another. If it does not do damage, you can unfold the boxes and store them flat - but this might impact resale value; in any case, you'll have them for re-packing. Alfred

I recycled all the boxes except the engine boxes. I just didn’t have room to store all the boxes. The room that I freed up was significant. Florida homes are storage space challenged.
We recently downsized and I sold most of my O gauge. I found that not having boxes didn’t make any difference in my ability to sell or the price I sold items for. It might make a difference if you have something that is very collectible but for run of the mill rolling stock, accessories, buildings, etc there’s no real difference.

I keep all of the train boxes and store them under the layout. It's starting to look like a hobby shop. Kudos to my son who recently organized and cataloged our stuff. WOW. I was just looking at a train store website for someplace I am hoping to visit next week and you rival them!
I am not so organized as that and I do not have stuff in similar quantity. But I confess to keeping EVERY engine box and shipping carton I have received where the cartons are original. FWIW it does make a value difference on resale (which I have never done or contemplated) but the main reason is to keep the original product together with its original packaging.
The packaging if not the products themselves are in much better shape than I am!

Based upon the prices that folks are asking for empty train boxes on Ebay the obvious answer is keep everything including the protective wrapping.

There’s more to consider than meets the eye.
Are you living in your final above ground dwelling? If so you can do one of two things, 1) Dump all the boxes to have more space, or 2) Keep the boxes for everything to make it easier for your heirs or relatives to sell, store or transport the trains after you move underground.
If you feel you have a few more moves in your future, definitely keep the boxes to secure the trains during the move. I was happy I did when moving across country.
At the very least keep locomotive, passenger car and other delicate rolling stock to prevent inevitable damage.

I keep my boxes. Most of my stuff is in them most of the time. I don't have any other storage.
