I just got an email from METCA that the METCA Exclusive Lionel SD70ACe in the Red Tail scheme and/or the Lionel Lines scheme will be shipping so and we could have them by the end of the month. Yeah!

METCA has more custom-run offerings these days than Lionel’s entire 1969 catalog, which was an anemic 8-page “pamphlet” as I recall. Of course back in 1969, we thought Lionel’s days were severely numbered. How times have changed!

Its like a mini-catalog day when I see the email from MTH with their latest uncatalogued items from the various dealers. They definitely hit on something by going special runs only.

I don't think the new MTH is special runs only. From what I have seen the folks at MTH decide on either a loco or rolling stock for a production run then contact their dealer network to see if they want to do a dealer exclusive to tag on with the MTH regular production. Bill Whether Lionel, MTH or Atlas… any custom-runs are closely tied to a catalog’d or regular-production offering. I’ve been lobbying MTH to do a special-run of RockyMountaineer Superliner cars with glass dome tops, and I even have a dealer willing to sponsor the project. MTH already own the tooling for such cars that would closely replicate the prototype. So that’s not the issue. But we need to wait until MTH decides to offer Superliners again, and we’d tag along with Amtrak and Santa Fe regular production runs. I thought we were close, when MTH announced bi-level cars recently, but no dice in Superliners yet. So we shall see. I’d be lying if I told you this is an easy process. It can be VERY frustrating, unless you’re trying to do a special run of 36’ reefers. LOL!!!

Bill I don't see the new MTH's market approach as anything to apologize for. Its different from Lionel's more traditional twice year catalogs and MTH's is flexible and interesting with strong involvement from the dealer network. Its likely that MTH's volume is a bit smaller but I am sure its far less risky and it is likely quite profitable.
