Both engines arrived today. Happy to say they were NIB as described. Definitely not feeling the sting anymore and feeling it was a great deal now seeing them in person! Can't wait to get these on the track! Wow, they look great!

I'm glad some are finding good deals on e Bay. But from someone that just last week sold an item on E Bay through my neighbor, (I don't have an account and she does it to help and doesn't take a dime). I sold one of my K Line Hudsons. Price sold was 367.00, shipping with full insurance came to 35.00. Several days later E Bay sent the payment to my neighbors bank account, 276.00. They sure took a chunk out. I have E Bays receipt she printed out on this sale.

So in an unfortunate turn of events, I discovered that my Hiawatha has damaged drive wheels. In my haste to just get a look at them after I received them, I didn't give them a great look underneath. Just now discovered it as I finally have time to get them back out and run them. I don't know what you would call this, but searching it looks similar to zinc rot. It seems to be a somewhat common issue with these Hiawathas. It's a real bummer because this engine has never been ran before and was looking forward to running it.

That is a bummer. I bet you can find replacement drive wheels but replacing them might be a project in itself.

That looks similar to my Lionel prewar 253 with zinc rot wheels
Do you have wheel puller and press for wheel replacement
Bob
EDIT: What is the product/catalog number to look up parts?

Did find the part number for the whole drive block, MTH DF1200020, but it's out of stock on MTH website. Anyone got any good leads on somewhere to look for parts?

Although I'm afraid I haven't turned anything up, it pays to Google a specific engine and issue as this has come up before in the last 5 years with people hunting around for alternative drive blocks. Of course, unless the seller has noticed this and/or you have done some research in advance you won't know whether a particular model is prone to zinc pest. I'm staring at 8 passenger cars that need truck replacements some 15 years after getting them . . .

Just got my third 385E ( returned the second one as someone drill a hole in frame and the cow catcher to add a front coupler. ) as a whole it is in good condition and things I can live with, the tip to the latch on the boiler front is broken off. But it stays shut even thou. Trucks where squeezed together on the tender for some odd reason but took care of that. It runs good, My first 385E is black, this one is gray. Happy they are different colors. Will take pics later or tomorrow, and will post.

Google “MTH Hiawatha drivers flaking” Member on another forum purchased a different power/drive block and only difference was the color of the wheels so he painted wheels to match. Try contacting MTH at: info@mthpartsandsales.com And see if they have a substitute part for you. I have wheel puller, press, and wheel cups if you want to send it to me and I will see if I can help, you pay shipping both ways. Bob EDIT: on eBay: MTH traction drive wheels (2) for $14.95 plus $5.35 shipping item #296198585645 Not sure if they will fit your locomotive BUT may be worth a try Attachments:

Another member on another forum was able to return his locomotive to the seller for a complete refund because of the zinc rot wheels.
Just my 2cents

After going to York several years ago and not finding the trains that I wanted; ebay and Allentown became the focus. Always wanted the pre-war 5344 Lionel Hudson but wasn't prepared to folk over $5000 for something that I could not or would not run. Was able to find two 5340 Hudson's that IMO are nearly exact duplicates on eBay for $550 ea. They were NIB but that was 10 years ago. Was also trying to find a K-Line Reading RS3 and also found that NIB on eBay for $220.

The zinc rot seems to be a consistent thing with this exact model the more I look into it. Thanks to you suggestion, I did email MTH parts. They have an alternate option in stock with black wheels and I'm in the process of ordering it. Hopeful that this will work out!
