As long as you don't have cats or they are not allowed in the train room, I have used cat litter.

Hi, I use Woodland Scenic ballast, WS Scenic cement, and WS Scenic sprayer with great results. Follow their instructions and you can’t go wrong. The track in the video is K-Line Shadow Rail (Lionel tubular type, with blackened center rail, and extra plastic ties)

Craignor that's some nice looking track. Thanks Healey, I take these four 4’ modules on the road to 5 train shows a year. I had Gargraves track on my modules before but the ends got chewed up fairly quickly, so I switched to the tubular track because it’s much stronger and can take getting knocked around in transport and setup/takedown. The ballast has held up very well too.

I like to use various types of materials because main lines, branch lines and sidings often have different types of ballast. I also like alternative cost effective solutions. I use material I sweep from the street. I wash in a 5 gallon pail and sift to three different sizes. I like Speedy Dry, again sifted for some uniformity. I also use Kitty Litter.

I've used starter chicken grit tossed it into a container added a bit of latex gray paint shook it and there is my real stone ballast. Used my ballast king car to place it.

I've mostly made my own, using crusher run stone (the kind that comes in 50 lb. bags for use between paver stones), sifted into three or four sizes. Comes in a variety of shades.

I have used Woodland and Scenic Express but converted over to Brennans. I love it.

donmow, welcome to the OGF. What not to use for track ballast – fish tank gravel and Elmers Glue. That is what I used at age 6 years old. I have my original post war Lionel tubular track incorporated into my current layout. From time to time, I find a small piece of gravel wedged into a tie channel.
