Good day hope this finds everyone well ! John here this my first thread so I hope i did it right ?
I first address my k-line 5343 N Y C Hudson tmcc engine every thing works great
coupler forward and reverse and announcements whistle and bell
a few laps around my 12x13 lay out and nothing works but engine will keep going no response to any commands ? I run the engine in conventional mode no problems
I turn off track and let the engine sit for an hour or so and repeats process
I am new to repairing my trains and don't have a clue where to start any advise is welcome
Thanks

Just a guess, is it TMCC controlled ? If so may be losing the TMCC signal.

Just a thought, I also have the K Line Hudson and have had this happen. But, it happened to my ABA Lionel F3s with TMCC first. After I built my first layout, the tracks set there while scenery, wiring was done. I decided to run these first the ABAs. Ran almost all around when sound stopped, no control, yet kept running. Shutting power off and re-starting ran good, all controls worked. Then suddenly again, lost sound and control. But noticed it happened at same previous area. So, cleaned trackage, pick-up rollers and lubed. Ran from then on with no problems and full control all the way around. Now, on the K Line Hudson, I don't run it as much as I use to, but when I do, same thing after a minute or so lose sound and no control. But after shutting power off and then on again, everything worked perfectly, then it happened again. Cleaned rollers, lubed, (I knew tracks were clean). Engine ran perfectly. Sometimes losing signal by dirty tracks or pickup rollers can cause an engine to go conventional like. Not often, and rare, but seen it happen.

You are dealing with old electronics. Almost twenty years old. I would pull the shell and see if anything is shorting. Also this being a great model, it would be worth it to upgrade to ERR cruise with a new R4LC receiver board.

Many K-Line engines came with a switch that allowed you to run TMCC or conventional. That may be the short term solution. My K-Line engines are all run conventional and still run like new to this day. K-Line made some really excellent stuff. Its a real shame that Lionel lawyered them out of business.

I’d say it’s probably the radio board but it could also be something like the connection between the antenna and the board. As Walter had the same issue as you I would suspect a defective bath of boards were used although I cannot recall this specific issue coming up before on this or other forums. You might want to try a Google search of the name and model number to see if that shows up anything.
