In todays Philadelphia Inquirer there is an article about a potentially landmark First Amendment case. It involves laws in Florida and Texas prohibiting social media companies from removing posts or accounts based on a viewpoint.
It was started due to a lawsuit by a participant in an Internet forum. It seems the person was a member of the Star Trek forum on Reddit. Reddit users must abide by a simple rule : “Be nice”. So when a user called one of the franchise’s characters a “soy boy”— a pejorative term insulting a person’s masculinity— in 2022 the discussion board’s volunteer moderators kicked him out. The user shot back, filing a lawsuit against Reddit under a landmark Texas law prohibiting social media companies from removing posts or accounts based on a view point— an unprecedented regulation subverting how the internet has operated for decades.
So, why am I posting this. Are Internet forums, like those we participate on, considered social media. If so the law would prevent anyone from being banned or having their account suspended.
Many of us have been banned by a very popular forum. Could this landmark case reverse that.

It'll be interesting to see what the Supreme Court comes up with. If you tell folks that own and operate a forum that they can't use their discretion regarding what content they will accept and what they will not accept post-wise, that would seem problematic. No different from a newspaper or magazine choosing what "letters to the editor" they will publish. Folks might not like it, but it's the owners' dime. Now, if you're a paying forum member, maybe, MAYBE, that's different.
It'll be interesting. No telling what this court will come up with.

Post something conservative on just about any social media and you'll see who's in charge.
