For those of you who followed my Halloween and Christmas layout videos on the Main Page this may come as a bit of a shock but I am selling off most of my O/O Scale stuff (the majority of which you did not see due to the seasonal holiday nature of the layouts) that I purchased in anticipation of a permanent layout with an excursion/famous named train theme and returning to MTH era tinplate both Standard and O gauge for the most part.
This decision is based partly on my inclination to have a more whimsical rather than realistic layout, and what I perceive to be better build quality for MTH tinplate compared to current O/O Scale products.
The sea change is surprisingly without regret, even at today's modern tinplate prices.
It would be nice if we could breathe a little life into the tinplate page.

There's a lot of nice operator quality stuff around these days as more collections start to hit the market. Interest seems to center on the pristine stuff, leaving a lot of well-loved pieces for good value. When I started, I only wanted stuff in terrific shape, but that has changed over time. Now I appreciate it for what it is...new, well-worn, nicely repainted, it's all good.
We need a tinplate photo gallery over here...just shots of tinplate in all its forms in an operating setting. What do ya think?

What do ya think? A picture is worth a thousand words. Right now I am in the hunting and gathering phase so my photos would all be piles of boxes as I am doing the full monty, engines, rolling stock and buildings/accessories both standard and o gauge tinplate. Also the layout materials I used for my temporary seasonal layout in 2023 will unfortunately not do with the type of more extensive wiring I anticipate needing to do. So Mianne is on my list as well at least to explore.

Well folks while I enjoy the sheer scale and mass of Standard gauge tinplate, O gauge tinplate also has its' own charm and is more manageable layout wise than their big brothers/sisters. Consequently I have decided to take the Solomon approach to the question of which scale to run and elect to dabble into both as long as my trust (as in I trust I will have enough money to do that) fund holds out. With the assistance of the kind folks at our local Star Hobby I was able scout out the Edison NJ. Show w/o leaving the comfort of my smart phone screen back in MD. to land a nice selection of MTH era 0 gauge tinplate freight rolling stock. In a prior tinplate life I had never considered/purchased O gauge. I was strictly a standard kind of guy. At least I am not repurchasing stuff that I sold a few years ago when I gave up on the idea of a layout. I may be an idiot but I am no fool.

I understand the appeal of Standard Gauge but O Gauge tinplate is pretty much the same only a little bit smaller. I look forward to seeing your tinplate empire come to life.

While I am still enamored with O gauge/scale tinplate, due to unforeseen and unexpected happy circumstances I am reviving a project I abandoned 2 years ago which is a Von Bros Circus themed standard gauge sized layout anchored by the MTH Ives Circus train with the red Ives engine, standard gauge sized main tent w/entrance, a side/freak show tent, circus banners, performers, animals, attendees vehicles; you get the picture.
The Von Bros Circus operated from the mid 40s to the mid 60s and was owned by my uncle Henry. It played in the Northeast/Mid Atlantic and to some degree the mid west, and parts south. It was a 3 ring circus. While not on the same level as the big circus shows, it was respectable in its' own right. It was what they refer to as a 'truck' show which simply meant that the circus traveled by truck rather than by train. That is where I take my poetic license.
I am in my hunter/gatherer phase now as I finalize the tent details for fabrication, and seek out animal and spectator figures as well as vehicles to fill out the circus grounds.
If anyone has suggestions for manufacturers or sources for the above accessories I need please let me know. I have the tent already sourced.
The layout will be 14'X12' +/-.
No pictures yet but in my imagination the layout is fabulous!
