Nice project, Adam. Good luck with it!
But I still think you're a closet Yankees fan.

NASA decals are down. After it dries I will give it a clear coat then reassemble. Initially I went with clear backed decals but the colors didn’t stand out enough against the dark blue. So I printed new decals on white backed decals. Not ideal but I’m happy with the result. I’ve got some NASA themed rolling stock in the works as well that I will share as I progress.

Nasa NW-2 is Just about done. I have coupler work to still do, but otherwise she is ready for service. The electro couplers are shot and I plan to replace them (front is already off in the photo). I also decided to remove the e-unit as it was problematic, so this engine is a forward only. Next, I will work on some Nasa rolling stock. So many fun projects, so little time! Attachments:

I've slowly been working on some cars to make an entire NASA consist. Two tankers to carry rocket fuel. A boxcar to carry spare parts. A passenger car to carry astronauts. A caboose just because. Attachments:

I have the same problem with home made decals light over dark. How do the decal company's do it? Could it be color laser jet vs ink jet? On one of my first try's with home made decals I had yellow over black. I had some stock decals to work with as you see. But in the first pic the numbers completely disappeared. So I found yellow decal numbers and letters to finish the job. The Iowa Logo and State seal were custom, so I had to print them on white backed paper. Then I cut out the white paper. I did the State of Iwoa with an exacto knife and it was a PITA,

I did the State of Iwoa with an exacto knife and it was a PITA, I think the consumer grade printers don’t print vibrantly enough for the ink to stand out on the clear decals. The white backing is a fine solution for me. Not perfect but not terrible.
