I purchased a New Lionel 6-18222 Diesel Engine from evil Bay four days ago. It was still sealed in plastic. I opened it today to test run it and only the front motor works. The front wheels spin but not the back. It will not move. I am afraid to take it apart. I am no electrician in any sense of the word. If my name was Ben Franklin, we would still be using candles today! I don't want to return it unless it's some major problem with it. I was going to take it to my local Train Shop to see if they could help. Is it something I can fix?

That sounds like it could be a very easy fix. Maybe a loose or disconnected wire.
If you are not comfortable opening it up to check it, a local train store near by they might be able to fix it quick and may not charge much for it.
If you haven’t already, you will also want to check the lubrication on the gears, so good idea to open it for that reason as well.

This engine was manufactured in the 90s. So make sure the grease hasn't hardened to a rock. Check the bottom and you should be able to unscrew cover on grease and if hard pick it out and clean, add new grease. An engine that sat that long, probable has had the grease harden. Its a great engine.

If a NIB engine doesn't run the first thing to check is surface corrosion on the wheels and pick-up roller. It could be impacted grease but I doubt that would freeze up the motor solid but anything is possible. If you know how to solder check for a broken lead to the pickup or motor and re-solder it. If you lived close by I could probably get the engine running in minutes.

They made the Rio Grande sd50 in both conventional and TMCC. The one you have is the conventional version so the fix may be easier. Check the wires first, most likely a loose or a disconnected wire. The engine has the open frame motors not can motors. Trace the wires from motor to roller. Btw I would take each motor apart to check for grease or no grease, check the brushes for wear, there should be none.
On second thought, beings your new to this I would take it to repair person and have him check it out.

Agree with others. Either a jammed gear due to old grease or a foreign object. Or a loose wire. Especially if you get one motor to run well.
