Here we are back to the same old story with Lionel. When the theater cars first came out with the camera I wanted one. Bought a COMPLETE set of CSX including the engine and EVERY car. All this for a stupid camera looking out the back window. Well what does Lionel do? A year later they put it in a caboose. THANK YOU LIONEL! I paid thru the nose and butt to get this and then you make it in a caboose for less than one tenth of what I paid. Okay. I am an idiot. Any way this idiot then buys the caboose thinking I can run it either way seeing what is in front over the train or backwards seeing where it has been.
BUT WAIT! Whats this? The app is NOT in the Play Store for ANDROIDS!!! After several calls and waiting over a year Lionel finally says it is on their site not in the play store. Great! I just feel so cozy and lovely with Lionel now. I download it and it works. I even posted on OGF about where to get it so others are not frustrated and have to feel the same LOVE I have for Lionel.
Advance to today! NEW ANDROID SAMSUNG S24 ULTRA PHONE!!! Yep you guessed it. App not available. I go back to the old post on OGF and download as instructed. App downloads, click OPEN! ERROR MESSAGE - this app is not compatible for this version phone. REALLY? You have to be kidding me!!! NOPE. After several tries always the same result.
Called Lionel. Actually got a human being. Explained problem. Answer - YES IT IS DOWN NOW. Explained what happened years ago when this first happened. SAME ANSWER, the app is down. SO IS THE LIONCHIEF APP! SAY WHAT? So if you buy a LIONCHIEF set and own an android phone you can't run you locomotive except via the remote? I ask when will these apps be up? "Let me ask tech". ANSWER - WE DON"T KNOW!!!
AND THIS IS WHY I DISLIKE LIONEL. They stop producing any control system except the app which you can not get! Will I recommend LIONEL? What do you think? Now if they get it back up soon I may change my mind but currently word of mouth from me is steer clear of Lionel!!! AND I MEAN LIKE REAL CLEAR!!!

I guess this is one of the pitfalls of trying to deal with the "high tech" Lionel stuff. I decided a long time ago to keep it simple, reliable and build a scenic layout. I turn on the power to the layout using two ZW's and a 1033 for lighting; the trains start to run and the layout comes alive. As a minimalist operating layout my trains have whistles, bells, horns and some effects but that's about it. I can fix/repair everyone right here.Never needed much else and if you see any exhibition layout like one at the Choo Choo Barn or one at a museum that's all that they do. Nothing against modern remote operation as we have it in the home for other things, but for trains I enjoy having reliable basic operation.

I feel your pain, Curtis, but might you be hyperventilating a bit? I can't count the number of times new hardware or operating systems have "broken" legacy software on my computers or phones, requiring the software manufacturer (Lionel, in this case) to scramble to put out a new, more compatible version. There's really nothing the software folks can do about this, if the makers of the hardware or the OS decide to make a change that inadvertently "breaks" the old version. Sure, it sucks, but from what you've said, it was Samsung, not Lionel, that created the problem, and *you*, for switching phones before confirming that the old software would be compatible. I always wait at least six months before investing in the "newest and greatest" upgrades -- that gives the software folks time to find and fix the incompatibilities. Hope you get it sorted soon, but in the meantime perhaps let "the Big L" off the hook a bit? And remember: those who live by tech, die by tech . . . one of the reasons I favor mostly Marx PW stuff!

Yes, it's an inconvenient truth that apps that operate anything are slow to catch up with new software in new hardware. I had a conversation with the person at York who at the time was in the early stages of creating WiFi control for MTH's DCS system. He mentioned one of the issues with apps was that they need to be upgraded, updated or made backwards compatible every time there is a new device operating system. Most times both the apps and the device are different companies that need to talk to each other. But as usual it's the customer that receives the frustration.
Even now the MTH WiFi app is undergoing a review and update after some bugs were found in the newest release ahead of the new WTIU release. They say it will be available "soon".
With that said, I still prefer command control to operate my trains. It's just more fun for me. Having to be tethered to a transformer to run the trains almost knocked me out of the hobby except for a Christmas set up. Nothing wrong at all with conventional operation, but with command control I found myself playing with the trains a lot longer each time.

Ahh I hear you but alas it is not even Samsung. It is Android and all phones or tablets running Android. And on top of that it is also the app to run trains not just the WiFi camera app. So I guess you still use a land line and no cell phone. LOL Most companies keep on top of updates that come to Apple OS or Android OS. Lionel doesn't. Now before you fly off the handle think about it. They Stopped ALL production of any operating system Hardware for the Base 3 and Base 3 app. If you are going to do that for longer than a couple months you had best be at least up to date on what is left!

NEWS FLASH! Lionel sent me an email.
Good Morning,
Thank you for contacting Lionel. Lionel is currently working on a fix for the app. I do apologize for the inconvenience. Once the app has been repaired Lionel will release a statement via email and Social media to inform customers of the update.
Thank you,

Impressive isn't it. In the mean time myself and everyone wanting to run trains including the new LionChief sets are out of lock unless you use the remote that came with it or the one that can run three trains. And just forget about the camera app! They already got you for over $1500 for the set not counting the caboose. SO NO RUSH!

Sorry for your problems Curtis but this just an example of what is wrong with Lionel and the tech they keep squeezing into their trains. This is also why I am backing out of the technology stuff that is produced by our O gauge mfgs.its just not the technology itself, its what comes with it, price increases, obsolescence of digital whatever!, items you bought a few years ago may not work with the next upgrade. Is this what everyone wants? Oh! Ill keep what digital trains I have but adding anything now or in the future is not on my radar.
Maybe I am over thinking this and not being a very techie guy and a guy with not lots of extra cash I think I'm on the right path.

It seems to me that as train importers seek to make their products more 'realistic' sound and performance wise and consequently more complex the more user issues we hear about. However from the perspective of the train importers since they are recycling pretty much the same engines/rolling stock over and over again, what gimmick can you use to sell these 'new' products other than a new paint scheme; custom runs, new so-called tooling, new Legacy/Blu Tooth features?
Yawn fest.
Here are some new feature ideas that have real value.
It works right out of the box, and thereafter.
There are no broken or missing parts.
The paint color/shade is correct.
The gear box doesn't self destruct.
Someone in preproduction uses spell check.
You have a customer service/repair department that actually serves and repairs.
Fortunately in my relative immediate area we have at least two train stores dealers that are boiler plate solid when to comes to customer service and knowledge.
Quality only begins when you take responsibility for the outcome of your responsibilities rather than depending on so-called QC programs and procedures to catch problems/issues.
Stand and deliver train importers.

Oh, believe me -- on the handle or off, I'm no apologist for Lionel, just pointing out that they have a whole lot of company in having to cope with shifting hardware and software changes. It's especially problematic for companies that are not primarily tech companies, who have at most small (or totally outsourced) coding teams, and thus find it hard to respond quickly when the hardware or OS they rely on takes a sudden turn. Lionel's incompetence has been repeatedly documented here (and endlessly complained about!), but this one time I think it's more a case of having the tech rug pulled out from under them, rather than having created the pratfall themselves, YMM(and obviously does)V . . .

All of that tech is way overpriced. Do it yourself for a fraction of the cost. Do it yourself cameraI want the NS theater car but not at $250. Wish they'd come out with one that does not have a camera at a lower cost.

You are obviously what the tech industry calls an "early adopter." People that buy the next latest and greatest do experience compatibility problems because other tech that's out there is NOT the latest and greatest. They also pay top dollar for that tech in order to have it first (like your camera train). Later adopters can get the same tech cheaper.
If I was going to use a smart phone with my trains, I'd buy an unlocked older model for $100 or so, download the apps I want for trains, and use that phone as a pseudo-dedicated remote for my trains only.

I avoid frustration with Lionel new products. I just won't purchase or be a part of BTO customers and be a part of the non compensated tester of their product. If I really, really like and want a product produced by them, I wait and see problems, fixes, etc. Then wait for reasonable prices on secondary market.

You know, as a new guy to O scale, I am blown away by some of it's failures. You (Lionel and MTH) sale locomotives with features that you have NO available operating system for? WTH? It takes years to get so called new systems to market, but you keep spitting out new locos daily? RIDICULOUS! There are NO excuses for this. We don't have this problem in HO thanks to NMRA standards. I love O scale for the bigger size, but I am starting to question my decision to get involved.

Your observations are a variation on a theme that has appeared in other threads on this forum. The delivery dates for the new OSs from both manufacturers has been kicked down the road more than a few times. The reason given that is/was COVID and supply chain disruptions is getting a bit old. If the lack of a current OS is a deal breaker for you then you may just want to shadow this Forum and wait for awhile until things shake out. With both MTH and Lionel trying to build more authenticity into their engines/rolling stock I can see how an HO hobbyist might start considering O/O Scale trains.
