Curious. When one receives their BTO item, finally. What happens when a Dealer accepts returns because of problems with color matching, mechanical problems, especially with the new cheap gearboxes, etc. Does Lionel rebate the Dealer, or are the Dealers left with a loss on their outlay? We hear from buyers that have returned items and received refunds or credit, (not sure about refund on their original shipping charges and return shipping charges if refunds are given on these). But never heard what happens to Dealers who accept returns if Lionel reimburses them?

Don't know for sure but I would bet Lionel doesn't, the dealer is stuck with the engine to sell and get what the can to cover the cost at least, I would hope. And I would say no on all and any shipping also.

I think it depends on the circumstances. If the product is defective then it would be covered by the one year warranty. If it is an appearance issue I would think that Lionel would reimburse the dealer. As far as the gear box issue it usually takes a long time to show up. Known gear box issues are with the Legacy K4’s, H10’s and other steamers. There are fixes for the problem.

Now its up to the buyer to repair. So, is it the consumers responsibility to dismantle steamers to check newly purchased engines for these future existing manufacturers problems so they don't tear themselves up in the future? Just asking if this is the expectation of the future on purchases?

Lionel will not acknowledge most of these issues. The paint variations don't bother me as much as the mechanical problems you can't see. Luckily there are other hobbyists who are adventuresome enough to look inside these steam locomotives that discover the problems early. If not for them I would have never known about the Legacy K4 gear problem. I have three versions of them but luckily I haven't run them yet to be damaged. A fix is available but it's not inexpensive.
There are a few Legacy steam locomotives I wanted to get from the last couple catalogs but I'm keeping my distance until I see evidence their gear problems are rectified. Unfortunately there's no other source to acquire most of what Lionel makes.

If I may paraphrase, he has had no problems with Lionel accepting returns. No negative impact to his business which is good to hear! The thread was started by rockymountaineer

There is a fix for the gear issues with the Legacy H10’s and it involves putting a shim in the gear box to keep the drive gear in position. There is a guy who offers a fix while affective it is rather crude. I have the proper shims to make the repair in my two H10’s and perhaps my Legacy NYC Atlantic and Reading and Northern 4-6-0.
I have four shims but maybe could get a few more if I needed them. I just need someone locally, anywhere in SEPA, to open up the shell and install the shims. It’s an easy fix but I don’t have the skills and don’t want to ship the engines.
