A friend just bought a proto1 mth engine and he had a few questions. I was not sure so I'm asking here.
Will the engine run in conventional? Should he change the battery?
Anything else I should know about proto 1

MTH Proto 1 engines will only run conveniently.
Very early proto 1 engines (1997 to I think 1999) don't have batteries. They are similar to Williams engines. Later proto1 engines, however, do.
The short answer is if it has a battery and it is not already replaced with a BCR, then replace it with one.

Number one is change the battery or put in BCR. Engine is only conventional. If it battery dies out, you will hear the three clanks of death. Then you will need a chip kit to unscramble the board. No clanks of death with a BCR.

I have a few PS-1 locos, been running them for over 30 years or so. First thing before even starting the loco is to put in a fresh battery but better yet install a BCR. What I did with my Fleet of PS-1 locos, at the 5 year mark for each loco I installed a BCR. Never had any issues with the locos.

ProtoSound engines, and any non-command equipped engine, can operate with a DCS hand held remote if a TIU output channel is set to variable. The remote wheel acts like the throttle of the transformer.
But yes, PS1 engines do operate conventionally.
