Hey all,
I have mostly streamliner stuff on my indoor layout but have several UP railking Madison passenger cars that I'd like to bring in with an appropriate loco. I know these are basically heavyweight cars and the era that I primarily am after is around 1940, though I have few domeliners that come after. I thought I read somewhere that these were used well after the lightweight cars came in but mostly on the back routes. So my question is would a diesel streamliner be appropriate for these cars for that era or should I think steam? Which locos would be correct or ok? My budget is not very high maybe around $150 for this one so any suggestions there would be good too.
thanks Mike

Because of the heavy passenger traffic, even after the war and into the era were less and less passenger travel. Railroad used whatever passenger cars were available and many times, even the SF and others RRs mixed Heavyweight cars,(sometimes because of shortages) into their streamlined cars. So having Heavyweights being pulled by Diesels F3s, F7s, etc. and even GP7 as the recent SF video I posted shows. Its your railroad and you can pull your passenger consist with whatever is on your roster. I even have my NYC Hudson pulling freight when needs arrive.

Walter (“Josef”) is correct in all respects, including what diesel engines you can use. Most of the railroads I know anything about used heavyweight cars well into the streamliner era, even with “name” trains such as on the Southern Pacific as well as Santa Fe. I have examples of heavyweight dining, Railway Express and baggage cars that were used with them.

You can use whatever looks good to you. Towards the end of passenger service the railroads ran some very mismatched consists. A single EMD ‘E’ or F-unit would look fine. I once saw a photo of a Canadian Pacific named train (the Boston-Montreal ‘Alouette’) from the 50s. The locomotive was an EMD E-unit hauling three heavyweight cars including an open platform observation car. I run a Williams Alco-hauled version on my layout. Shopping around for a used UP Alco FA or EMD F unit of any make should prove fruitful.

If you're sticking to the 1940 time frame there weren't many, if any, diesels pulling passenger trains. I don't know if you could find any O gauge steam locomotive for $150 or less.
But if the time frame doesn't matter and you're looking for a diesel the ones mentioned above would work just fine. You may find a used one made by Williams around the $150 range. But hey, you only live once! Go higher whether you can or not!
