A few weeks ago I posted on the "Ugly Trains" thread that I did not particularly care for the FM Trainmaster.
Now look at what I have in my possession. MTH 20-2233-1. SP FM Trainmaster. True be told it's my Brother-in-law's and he says it does not work.
First thing I did was replace the battery and inspect all of the wires and connections. All good.
No 3 clangs of death (I was hoping for that as I have the tool to fix that). No clicks when power is applied. No lights No movement No sound. Will not turn on in DCS or conventionally. Will not reset conventionally.
I made sure the switch on the underside was in the ON position. I even tried with the switch in the off position on the chance it was wired backwards.
I checked power from the pickup roller and wheels and I'm getting full voltage to the board.
Is there anything else I can check before telling my brother-in-law it either needs new electronics or will be a shelf queen?
Thanks. Ron
Edit ... I made it seem in the beginning like there might be a picture to view. But the forum won't upload my picture right now.

Try resetting it which must be done from a remote not the app. Also what transformer are you using. Also please make sure the TIU and transformer are both updated

I would look for the basics. Maybe a loose wire, a short or something. Like that. Also check capacitors in case any of them is blown.
What you described just sounds like something like that to me.

Since I have unplugged the power to the board and tested voltage from that point successfully, does that mean I can assume the problem is the board or something coming OUT from the board? How do I test a blown capacitor? I have never done that. vr Ron

This a good video on testing capacitors. Explains it way better than I could.
Also, sometimes a blown capacitor will physically show some bulging or damage.

PS2 5 volts is not worth the effort. Sorry to say time to upgrade to PS3. 5 volt boards are known not to last, even if you replace a defective capacitor more than likely it has taken out something else on the board.

This engine is not worthy of a PS3 upgrade. My brother in law only runs conventional anyway but he likes MTH sounds. I'm recommending he buy a Trainmaster PS1 or PS2 on Trainz for $150-$175, swap the shells, then re-sell the dead engine as a dummy to recoup some money. He could have a running engine again for under $100.
