Great, isn't it? In Lionel's favor, whether deserved or not, I'll assume that their manufacturers are having problems sourcing components. Meanwhile if you want to get into Legacy command control for the first time you face considerable expense. Great way to grow the hobby.

It’s how Lionel creates the demand for the Base 3. If the Cab 2 was still available no one would buy the new version. They discontinued the original Legacy system to create the scarcity. It’s all about the sales for the importers, not growing the hobby.

It’s all about the sales for the importers, not growing the hobby. Obviously Lionel is doing what works best for THEM. I just wish they would have followed the business model laserjet and inkjet printing manufacturers would have adopted. Give away the printer(s), and reap the rewards each time consumers need to buy toner and ink. Lionel apparently wants it both ways. And not to be outdone, the secondary market shysters follow suit with insane asking prices for existing 990's/993's. One of the ugliest sides of this hobby.

Lionel Beta tested what they thought the finished product was and it turned out not to be finished One takeaway from testing is that it needed an antenna As small as that may seem it changes the whole production schedule drastically If you talked to Dave you should know that they are in production now That doesnt mean they will be here tomorrow as there may also be problems identified there In my opinion Lionel is doing what every company should be doing when it comes to this product. Its called quality assurance. Dont rush things out the door if they are still in developement Test, test and then test again so every scenario that will be faced in the real world has been see in QA.
PS DAve That isnt the printer manufacturers model anymore I bought an Epson printer with the Eco TAnks 2 years ago and just added black for the first time two years later And I do alot of printing The colors are all at 1/4 to 1/2 level

I must be in the minority. I don't care nor would I put that amount of money out just to control engines, etc. with new gimmicks. My Legacy system does everything I need for controlling my layout. Then there is the problem that may arise once these get into consumers hands. Lionel has a History of newly released items, be it the gears, boards, or even simple thing like getting color matching correct or having a class on proper spelling to get that right. Will the Base 3 be bug free once in the buyers hands?

I have a spread sheet on my train inventory, going back to 1997 Legacy came to my layout in 2015. When was Legacy released? 2010/11? I have the 990 and a 993 with both remotes still having the original batteries. Long as my base is still working and/or Lionel is still repairing them. I will not be getting a Base3, that doesn't mean it won't happen but I don't jump on the bandwagon for the latest and greatest.

The history of gaffs by Lionel are less troubling (but troubling enough) to me than their persistence in manufacturing known problems such as the problematic gears in K-4s among a few other engine types. Obviously content to let the after market and DIYers figure out how to fix their problem Lionel just keeps cranking them out at ever higher prices. Caveat emptor is an interesting way to do business.

Been hearing some LionChief engines are developing gear problems. Slowly grinding away.
