What transformer are you using? Lionel trains, at least through the prewar and postwar period, should be run using AC. Same with Marx and most American Flyer.

From your earlier description of the things you purchased it sounds like you have an older Lionel DC only set. They made a number of starter sets between roughly 1973 and 1991 that ran on DC only and the 2-4-0 engine was an often featured head end power for these sets so it may be a case of having only DC power. As for Marx running on DC most of the postwar engines both Marx and Lionel will run on DC. The biggest problem with running some of the postwar trains on DC is you will have to disconnect the whistle - it depends on a pulse of DC overlayed on the AC to trip it. With DC only it will often sound continuously.
To the best of my knowledge the 1122 should run on either DC or AC. The three posts are just center ground and live to power the solenoid. Current type shouldn't matter. I did a little rummaging on the net and I found a couple of posters who said the electrical connections in the 1122 switches can "corrode over time and need to be cleaned." Unfortunately, none of them gave any indication of which connections (external, internal to the switch mechanism, or whatever) one was supposed to examine and clean. I'd recommend doing some web searching to see if you can find instructions that have some useful detail with respect to 1122 switches.
