Not often I ask, but been thinking of adding and replacing the front couplers of my F unit with more scale Kadee couplers. The Observation or end cars of my passenger cars will be receiving same. If so, what steps did you do? Looking at my Lionels the couplers are mounted to the inside skirt.

I replaced the lobster claw with kadee on the back end, I also tried doing a couple of my MTH madison passenger car to Kadee and was not happy with the results, so I'll be keeping the remaining cars stock. As some of you know I'm a big fan of kadee and all freight cars have been converted.
I wish I had some F units to convert. When I get my Rutland RS1 say goodbye to swinging pilots and lobster claws and hello to fix pilots and kadee

MTH and Atlas are easy to add Kadee coupler to front lead engine (ABA or ABBA consist), but Lionel is of a different nature. I can see taking apart just looking dismounting lead wheels from motor to get at skirt/pilot to remove the electro coupler.

Not familiar with Lionel engines, but I have added kaddee couplers to MTH and Atlas. Those engines came set up to accept kadee conversions. You may want to think about closing up the opening on the pilot so it does not look like a huge gaping hole with the kadee . A two rail pilot would be great if Lionel makes them. Maybe you could modify an MTH 2 rail pilot to fit. Ron
