Got off the phone with a friend in Illinois who asked me if I had heard any differences in Lionel 4-4-2 Hiawatha's engine needing minimum 54 curve minimum? Because of his area he doesn't have a full 54 curves rather a combination with 48 radius and some 60 in it and asking if this will be a problem? I'm surprised also that a 4-4-2 won't go around a 48 radius but looking at picture and calling him back, it maybe due to closer coupling of the Tender to engine? Any thoughts?

Yeah, I think that the closer coupling may well be an issue but your friend's 48 + 60 radius arrangement is a bigger one because the main driving wheels may not track reliably on that. If Lionel says it requires O-54 you are taking a chance on trying to run it on less. I have never run anything other than relatively short wheelbase diesels on O-48 (or less) and certainly not any steamers I have.

I don't know anything about the Lionel 4-4-2 but I do know if a manufacturer says their model needs a minimum radius to run reliably then that is what you need to have. I've known a number of individuals who have tried to run something on less than what is recommended and every time their efforts came to grief.
