One thing I noticed in the is catalog is the expansion of the traditional line which seemed to be dying and the increase of scale sized fantasy trains

One thing I find odd is that the catalog says on their GP9 that electro couplers are only on long hood end and not both ends. 500.00 bucks for 2 wood coaches. 169.99 for flatcar and 2 Acme trailers. Really? 209.99 for one freight car sound car. I remember when you could buy 3 for under 229.99. 299.99 for a Vision Line caboose. Really? My money hoard is saved for another year. Guess we will be able to afford another year of Hot Dogs and Beans. Thanks Lionel.

... 500.00 bucks for 2 wood coaches. ... Even more for the Halloween versions later in the catalog. $520 MSRP and Charlie Ro has 'em for $375/two-pk. Money just doesn't go far these days in Lionelville.

Well, it's a huge catalog at over 220 pages but my interest in it is in inverse proportion to that. I'm not rubbishing Lionel but but the prices - even with dealer discounts - are a barrier to interest as I can't see that the products are worth them - or not worth the risk of shoddy assembly or color matching or defective control software issues.
I did notice a couple of interesting things: (1) There's an Illinois Central City of Miami set in that train's unique livery but I recognize all the cars as the generic Lionel ABS kind. (2) There are quite a few new themed boxcars with historic railway art but I have the ones I want already and they came from K-Line with a few MTH extras.
P.S. Although advertised as an "all new" product with "new tooling" the cars in the City of Miami set are not described as aluminum and their designs are the same as I have seen before as to window placements and the like.
So no thanks from me to this catalog.

I like the scale sized fantasy items. The optimists would say that perhaps more traditional guys are moving to scale and like fantasy trains. The cynics among us would say that fantasy trains are a great way for Lionel to avoid complaints on paint schemes not being prototypical!

Like the NS ES44 but $750? Don't think so!

Yeah, this is now a rich man's game. There was a time when I could have been lured in, but those days are long gone. Even at 30% off MSRP, it would be hard to justify most of this stuff.

I can afford to buy some of the higher end items, but I see no point in doing so. I get just as much fun out of the bottom end stuff like the $299 FT diesels and starter sets.

I am lookjing at the five (5) "Merry Christmas" coaches and and maybe - just maybe the Peppermint Railroad berkshire across the page - I would need to know how well the green color on the two items matched -

Mr Muffin has a video announcing his custom runs of this catalog. If your like Midwest road names, you should find something you like. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXIKvoPsZbUIf anyone else hears of any custom runs, please let everyone know!

While I may add to what I am ordering from the Lionel 2024 Vol 1 Catalog, I did order all 3 UP GP9 from Charles Ro.

While I may add to what I am ordering from the Lionel 2024 Vol 1 Catalog, I did order all 3 UP GP9 from Charles Ro. This catalog is full of UP offerings. Just as well for me since I stick to New England and Canadian road names.

Fun stuff in this catalogue - thankfully for my wallet though, very little for the Canadian railroader.
