Never had a crack windshield before, till now. Several months back, had a small, and I mean small pinhole on my Ford Ranger Windshield. Then overnight, must be the weather changing, a crack went from bottom all the way across. Called up and they will be out Monday to replace 376.00 total. But this is my baby, 1999 Ford Ranger which I rebuilt bottoms up and my favorite driver. Even if it doesn't come with all the fancy push buttons, etc. (Still have to crank side windows up and down).

Ahh, the joys of vehicle ownership!
One time on our ‘99 Honda Accord I went to drive it one morning to find the rear view mirror hanging from the windshield. Turned out that the mirror was constructed as part of the windshield. Had to have the whole windshield and rear view mirror replaced. Not just the mirror.

Ouch! I feel your pain, had it happen to me a few times. One tip: the plastic resin repair that they can (relatively cheaply) force into a small chip really does work to stop a chip or small crack from spreading. If you carry glass replacement coverage, a lot of insurance companies will even waive any deductible and pay the full cost for the repair, since it's a lot cheaper for them than waiting 'til the chip/crack spreads and they have to pay for the windshield replacement, even with the deductible. Yours spread so quick that might not have been an option, but good to keep in mind for future misadventures!

That’s a problem made for duct tape.

That’s a problem made for duct tape. So, if I see a car with a periscope out of the roof and windshield covered with duct tape pulling into my driveway, I need to set another plate on the table since its Adam from OGF saving money to buy another second hand train.

If you saw the 20-year-old Volvo that I am driving (it's built like a tank, a cold war era Soviet tank), you would realize this wasn't far from the truth. Yes, I am frugal, but I am also in the middle of 8 straight years of paying to get the kids through college and if you saw what they cost these days you would understand my frugalness. I could get a brand-new car ever year for that price. And a nice one too!!

BTW, some car insurances pay for windshield replacements. Have you checked into that?

I could get a brand-new car ever year for that price. And a nice one too!! Seriously. We were having a discussion with some friends, kinda reminiscing of how it was in the 50s and 60s. Were a working man working 40 hour weeks, sometime if lucky, overtime. Was able to afford a car, buy a house, and put his kids in college or a trade. The wife stayed home. Today with both working, they can barely get by and either live with parents or rent because they can't afford a house nor send their kids to college without taking a loan out, or getting a 2nd mortgage. I worked my way through college. My parents helped yes, but I never told them how much my books, nor tuition cost. I had no loan, just cash working many times till 1:30 in the morning and 1st class was 8AM. Its good to see your helping your kids and understand what it means to sacrifice.

Walt, that is a hefty charge; however, it is worth it for that nice vehicle - and it comes with four arm exercizers! Alfred
