What is the difference between an Atlas, Lionel and an MTH coil car?
Did anyone buy MTH's tooling for these?
Anyone have a preferred brand?

I don't have them, but Atlas cars usually have finer detail. An old saying is put them on the track and never touch them again. The detail is delicate.

They are very delicate, I parked them in the train yard and gently dust them off from time to time. Sorry, that doesn't answer your question.

I only have one of them (an MTH model) but both Lionel and MTH have produced many different road name versions such that it's really a question of which road you want to model and which of the many versions appeals to you (and you can find). I was once tempted by this MTH NYC version with a removable top and coils underneath but did not get it:
I think that generally speaking all Atlas cars are too delicate for my liking and there's enough variety in the MTH and Lionel versions for most purposes.

They all are nice but I prefer MTH's. More reasonable priced than the other two usually and just as nice. If money is no object then AtlasO.

The Atlas coil cars are their own tooling. They made coil cars long before MTH downsized. All the importers made them but my favorite is K-Line. Their coil car bodies are die cast.

Now I'm more inclined to purchase an Atlas rolling stock. I like their hidden uncouplers and air hoses. Yes, they are a little more delicate and appreciating them more now on my downsized layout. If I'm running detailed engines, I want them to pull detailed cars. But then again, I have lots of other brand rolling stock, just as nice and not hardly detailed.

Lionel’s recent scale coil cars were made from the former MTH tooling.

The only major difference I see between the different manufacturers is that MTH / Lionel have the same coupler height, where as Atlas is lower. Also Atlas is more detailed for them then the other 2. But this is my opinion. Everyone will have there which makes this hobby fun.
