Building layout to use Yellowstone loco.. they are 2-8-8-4, quite similar to 4-8-8-4 Big Boy locos.. 1) How tall, above the rails, are they? (I don't have mine yet) 2)Other than needing O72 curves, any quirks I should know about? Thanx..

Backing up needs more clearance than going forward!

They are about the same height but the Yellowstone is a little more beefier. I ran both on the same radius of track they both did fine. If running on O72 always do test runs before making any permanent items near the track. Even though they run fine on O72 if you can go larger like O80,O88 it will be even better. Good luck and have some fun.

Backing up needs more clearance than going forward! More clearance vertically, as thru a tunnel...or more clearance in the articulation swing? Have seen recommendations of 3 1/2 inches, but will go with 4 or so...

Have seen recommendations of 3 1/2 inches, but will go with 4 or so... More clearance on the swing. PLAN FOR 4.5 Inches Minimum! I have 4.5 and still bump in some areas and definitely do backing up. 5 Inches sounds like a lot but it is way safer. Especially if you may buy bigger down the road. YEP I said bigger as in the Big Blow or the extremely long (54") Coal Burner #80 to name a couple.

I agree with Curtis here the more clearance the better it will be. When your running articulated or larger diesel locomotives always use the room you have. Always build to the space you have.
Most of all, have fun!

Several recommendations on side clearance, for swing of articulated BigBoy loco.....4.5 5 inches...is this measured from center rail? What about straightaways, center rail to centerrail of track alongside... 3.5 minimum?

4.5" minimum center to Center rail on straight aways. If running articulated engines then 5.5" on curves. The bigger the better if your running scale engines of all types.
Remember test as you lay out your tracks, you won't be sorry.

Still planning...Coming off an O72 curve, onto a straightaway..About how many inches of track down the straightaway, till the articulated area swings back into normal position? Also, when front or rear is swung out over a curve, how far above the platform is it? Using Gargraves w wooden ties...I'm sure a DZ1000 will fit, without getting whacked...
