I began taking down my 6-8’ x 22’ layout the day after Thanksgiving. The trains are now packed in boxes, although some re-arranging needs to be done, the accessories are off and packed, two of the 13 switches have been removed, some track has been unscrewed, 3 of the 5 transformers have been disconnected and small portions of the benchtop work has been removed. There is plenty more to do – more dismantling of track (the elevated section ), and removal of controls and wiring. Lastly, I will tackle breaking down the benchwork. If all goes well, I will re-construct a layout. Alfred (There is still a 5’ x 6’ loop left intact with transformers connected – in case I suffer withdrawal and need to run a train.)

Re-construct, as in build-a-new-one? Love building them...hate finishing them. Good luck!

I began building this layout in my uninsulated attic in late 2005, and completed the main benchwork and track in 2006 (then life happened) – about 6-months. I have to admit that I used the track I had on hand without a plan and just wanted to have a large area. I was not careful with the assembly; none the less, I expanded and fixed problems as they occurred to the extent possible. I finally got most equipment repaired and accessories on by about 2021. Because of persistent problems, I named the layout the SWSD RR – Sometimes Works Sometimes Doesn’t RR. My interest in Lionel trains began in the late 50’s. I wrote an article about this and my other two layouts in the April 2022 issue of Switcher Magazine for the Lionel Operating Train Society. I run exclusively early post war Lionel equipment. I hope to construct a more robust and properly functioning layout in the future. Alfred More to come...

Denny, you did not miss any post. I had not mentioned a move; that is, until today. Alfred

I continue to do the layout breakdown. 31 full and 13 half O31 track sections, and counting. I should have counted the straights and curves separately. I can't imagine now why I had so many half sections. I am moving (in fact, it's been going on for a few weeks now.) As I will say more later about my ideas for a new layout - but, the big idea is O72 curves and long straight runs. None the less, as I work to undo the layout, I find myself haveing terrible thoughts - that a new layout may never go up. In any case, everyything will be packed nicely. About what I think will be about half of the boxes have been moved to the 'new' house. (If my wife really got a good look at all of the boxes, she would say that we already will need an addition.. I don't think I have much; however, it does take up a good amount of space. Alfred

At this point, except for the two main transformers, all of the train equipment is boxed, and has been moved to the ‘new’ house (most arranged neatly in a closet - that is a new one for me). About one-forth of the trackwork has been removed – that will continue tomorrow (All, except for two of the thirteen switches remain; however, bulbs, lanterns, and CVPs have been removed.) Alfred

I've been too busy with other packing / moving activities to do much dismantling of the layout; however, I did get to the attic for one thing this morning - I disconnected the two main transformers to pack them (a KW and a V). Alfred

Wow. So exciting. A NEW layout. A chance to make corrections and fulfill dreams. My hat is off to you sir. A bold move for sure. I love reading your progress and am excited to hear of the progress on the new layout. I hear you on just laying track and proceeding without plans. I unfortunately did that somewhat. Now with a 32 x 55 layout I am somewhat committed. Take it slow and easy and PLAN PLAN PLAN. WIRE for DCS as it will run Legacy and DCS and CONVENTIONAL!
