That's true, but I'm not that guy. One of the good (or not-so-good depending upon your perspective) things about modeling a specific time and place are the limits (there's a term you don't see much around here ) placed on your spending habits. Nobody was running double-stacks in the 1950s.
Obviously, everyone should do what makes them happy (and what they afford).
Best,
George
Your comment really resonated with me George as respects modeling to a specific time, and place. My layout premise is largely imaginary which can turn into a money pit quickly. To add to that I typically only run passenger sets, so I compounded my financial woes. But I enjoy it so what the heck. Modeling a specific time and place doesn't give you immunity from overspending, you know. There's no guarantee. On the 1950s Panhandle, I could go absolutely hog-wild with Decapods. A friend has an enormous stable of them. A Sunset/3rd Rail version (after you install TMCC in it) will set you back $600-800. Lionel came out with their version (using MTH tooling of the mid-2000s) at an MSRP of $1500. Pick up a few of those beauties and your wallet will be screaming for mercy.

... Modeling a specific time and place doesn't give you immunity from overspending, you know. There's no guarantee. ...
Ain't that the truth! I can remember back when MTH first offered its Erie Triplex locomotive. It was often referred to as THE Triplex. Now that Lionel has the tooling, they've announced TEN different roadnames in their brochure PLUS a 15-car "super set" offering. And at latest count, I believe there are currently another SIX models announced as special-runs: 3 from Mr. Muffin's Trains, 1 from Brady's Train Outlet, and 2 models have been previewed by The Train Loft (with the official announcement to the general public coming very soon).
Ironically... some of the special-runs were officially unveiled AFTER Lionel's deadline for ordering the Triplex models illustrated in their initial Vision Line Triplex brochure. So the question isn't so much, "Are you ordering "A" Triplex locomotive?". Rather Lionel wants the discussion to be more in tune with, "How many Triplexes are you gonna order?"

They are trying to recover their purchased-tooling cost...
