It is sort of bassackwards but think about printers. The printer is almost given away because the profit is in the ink.
Same with magazines. Paid Subscribers drive advertising rates/income.
The magazine subscription is almost free because readership drives up advertising rates.
In digital it is called the number of impressions. Same concept the more impressions the more the site/product can charge.
With influencers, a similar model. Once they have a number of subscribers they start getting revenue sharing for the ads that show on their channel (impressions again).
Sure the influencers of any commodity may have started out with a sincere interest in what they are hawking, but be assured they stay in it for the money.
