I have no problem designing/using my own inventory system (Excel, Access, SQL Server, whatever), but I'd like to find all of the DATA somewhere, so I can just "look it up" and choose what I have in my own inventory. Doesn't there exist a database somewhere that has every O Gauge train/rolling stock across all manufacturers, with years produced, and estimate values based on condition?? I just inherited my dad's trains, including dozens of Lionel, MTH, WIlliams steam locomotives, from pre-war and postwar. I gotta believe someone has all of the data so I can just "pick it" from a list. Otherwise, I'll have to spend time looking up every single item in a web search, finding prices, making a best guess about its year manufactured, etc. Or, I'll be inudating this fourm with questions and pictures...and you don't want that!!
Please, someone, point me in the right direction of a website or database that already has every single O gauge locomotive and rolling stock stored somewhere!!!

…. Doesn't there exist a database somewhere that has every O Gauge train/rolling stock across all manufacturers, with years produced, and estimate values based on condition?? … There were several choices for model train databases several years ago. Some of them had drop down lists with most trains listed up to that point. But they suffered from lack of updates and most of them no longer functioned after Windows XP as they were abandoned by their developers. An Internet search for model train software will list the old programs.
Some were beta models and their websites warned users to keep a copy of the data they entered, just in case.
So us train people have to enter our own data into our own design. I still haven’t done much with the iMac “Under My Roof” program yet. So far it doesn’t look like a traditional database so I need some time to figure it out.
Depending on the operating system you use you can check out the Google or Apple Store for inventory programs. But none I have found are specifically for trains.

One site you may try is www.hobbydb.com/. I use it to manage my Brooklin model collection and they do have trains in their database. However, I do not know how complete their database is. For Brooklin, it is fairly complete.

Curtis, glad to see you back posting. I catalog my trains and items using an Excel spreadsheet. I don't have much and it serves my purposes well. I have item name, description, year of manufacture, condition, purchase and repair dates, and a lot of other background info. Alfred (I also use Excell to catalog layout track routes (switch positions) and wiring info. I also used it to catalog consist make up and route info - I did this for someone who was affiliated with a small train museum and needed a way of directing volunteers on how to put trains together and make runs.)

Look at Apache open office. It's free and pretty good. This way you have lost nothing but a little time...

Please, someone, point me in the right direction of a website or database that already has every single O gauge locomotive and rolling stock stored somewhere!!! To circle back on this, I wound up developing my own system using SQL Server (backend) and MS Access (frontend). Since there's no single repository of model train data, I had to make a system that could easily do web searches. With a Manufacturer and Part Number entered into my system, an automatic Google search will return Road Name, Description, etc, as well as recent eBay lots, and other vendor hits. The user could merely copy/paste data from there (instead of typing every other detail). Saving the links is part of the operation. Lucky for me, my lady-friend enjoys working on this project with me, and she does all of the data entry, as I pull my dad's boxes out of the closet, and the item off the layout (or display shelves). The app runs on my machine at home, but we use an iPad and TeamViewer to remote into it. We've already boxed and entered data for 125 pieces of rolling stock; about half done. Not to mention the accessories, track and other sundry items!

Sounds like a great piece of work. You may want to consider posting your work up on Github for others to leverage.

Bruckner8, Welcome to the OGF. Sounds as if you have developed a good inventorying system. As for a searchable database of O Gauge trains, I can't say. Perhaps AF3020 or harborbelt70 may have an idea. Maybe a call to the TCA Reference Librarian may give you a lead. Alfred

My friend and I use Excell. His is very up to date. I use Excel also. It has a lot of database functionality (search/sort), you can attach images, other docs, etc. The problem is being diligent and keeping it up-to-date.
