For those that have "Lit Buildings" with a model railroad layout, what village do you have and what scale do you run? My collection is Department 56 (mostly) in the Heritage Village style. Mostly Dickens but some of whatever suits my fancy. I was never able to get a definitive answer about what fits. Every village is different and there are a huge amount of options. So, to help me decide, I took a building to a train store and compared the size of the scale people to the front door. (I prefer no 50' people in my displays) Seems HO fit well. Bought a Bachmann 4-4-0 and a couple of cars for my 1880s look. That's when I realized the building was a North Pole Village and smaller than the Dickens scale. (Note: Snow Village is even larger) Over the years Dept 56 hasn't been much help - they've released different size trains. Since I had the track design already and had bought all the track, I thought I was locked in. Then I found that Dept 56 had a neat 4-4-0 set in On30. So that's been my solution. It seems nothing is a perfect match since all the buildings don't match and the "People" surely don't match. Plus, almost every brand is different as well, but it suits me. I like thinking "whatever you like, is what works" but I'm curious what choices are in this community. Bill.

I don’t have a D56 or similar village and don’t really know about the size differences but I’ve seen a few villages and while O gauge works I think that On30 is the best fit in the villages I’ve seen. The people, vehicles and details I’ve seen are too big for the buildings so I don’t think it’s a matter of scale as much as what appeals visually. To my eyes, based on my limited experience, 3 rail O gauge is a very good fit but On30 is better. It just looks right.

I agree Country Joe - I love the villages, but do not use the "huge" people. I'm not obsessive about exact scale, but I do like it to seem semi-normal. If it makes me smile, it is my "official choice" for today.

So far my buildings are either Menards or Woodland Scenics. Both appear to be O scale to my eye. Menards are lit up like there's no tomorrow. Woodland Scenics lighting is more subdued.

Neat. I love when the room is bright enough to see things, but dark enough to see the effects of a village all lit up. "I like lights"

Neat. I love when the room is bright enough to see things, but dark enough to see the effects of a village all lit up. "I like lights" I have dimmable LED spotlights and a dimmer switch in my train room. When fully on there is plenty of light but I mostly enjoy dimming the lights to simulate moonlight so I can see all the details but the layout lights can shine in all their glory. I also like lights, a lot!
