I like the 4-4-0 Gold Mountain set pg 115 and the PRR on pg 137. I like the 4-4-0's and the Gold Mountain set looks interesting, hmm! Dave

Those prices I see in the new Lionel catalog are way too high..it’s absurd.
The new Big Boy is $2900. I paid $1600 for a new JlC Legacy UP Big Boy in 2007, and it came with a free Legacy base and Cab-1.

I paid $1600 for a new JlC Legacy UP Big Boy in 2007, and it came with a free Legacy base and Cab-1. I wanna say I paid in the neighborhood of $1,550 or so by pre-ordering the "last Mike Wolf" MTH Big Boy #4014 from Clyde at Stockyard Express. That was the model delivered in early- to mid-2022. I had resisted buying a Big Boy for all those years. But the MTH version at that price-point and the quillable steaming whistle feature called my name... especially after I saw an earlier MTH version with the same feature. Now that I see the newest Lionel models carrying a $2,400+ street-price, I think I'm MORE than happy with my MTH Big Boy that's barely 6 months old. I never was all that impressed with Lionel's depleting coal-load feature anyway.

I love Lionel. Always have but the prices are just out of reach for me any more but have you checked out the prices of used Legacy and Lion Chief products on Ebay? They're out of sight also!

For the heck of it, I wanted to compare these prices to what you can buy equivalent MTH. There aren't many direct/equivalent comparisons, but one that is close is the Lionel Legacy GP-20 at $650 versus the MTH Premier GP-35 at $500 (on Pat's Trains). Pretty significant premium for Lionel it seems. 650.00 is steep for a GP20, preorder price can be found for 539.00- still more than I would want to spend for a Geep.....but if they had a Road Name I wanted I would times 2 . My wallet is safe this time around.

Don't use eBay for prices, there are sellers that think they are selling gold and price everything sky high. Look on the secondary market, tons of stuff for sale. I just bought a legacy engine that was almost new for half of what it was on ebay. Some cosmetic issues that were a easy fix. Dave

There’s nothing in this catalog for me. The prices are way too high for toy trains.

Dave, what are some good secondary markets to check out for Lionel stuff. I regularly check out Facebook market place but would like to know of others. Web site like TrainZ, they have huge amount of used trains of all kinds Z,N,ho,O,G and others. They have a web site that is one of the best. Facebook groups, there are groups for every scale and type of trains. No cost to join any group, they are free. Local clubs that may be selling excess trains, As with anything do your homework know what the item is, how much it should be selling for, how much your willing to pay. Look at all pictures very carefully, increase their size if your able, what is the return policy. Buying used items can be tricky but using some of my suggestions will hopefully lessen it. Remember nothing in life is free, if what is offered is too good to be true, it is probably true, walk away!! Again some guys will tell you the sun is blue, avoid them at all costs. Deal with people and dealers you trust, you will get some great trains!!

Not for me. I'll stick to the prewar and postwar trains. The modern trains are for millionaires.

After looking through catalogs and custom offerings the last several years I'm finding that there are a lot of trains I already have. Looks like my mass buying of trains has trickled to a halt. I'm just looking to fill some holes in my collection but won't be disappointed if I don't. I'm thrilled with what I have!
These are the items that peaked my interest. I may get all of them, some of them or none of them.
2331401 New York Central Dreyfuss Hudson #5449 (I already have a MTH ProtoSound 2 model, and I don't buy duplicates just for the latest electronics. But this new Dreyfuss Hudson looks really cool. I'm hopping on and off the fence for now.)
2331480 Santa Fe Northern 4-8-4 #2926 (Restoration) (I've been wanting a Santa Fe Northern since we moved to Southern California. This is probably the most definite purchase for me. The Lionel 4-8-4's have been very good locomotives the last few years.)
2333340 New York Central AA E8 #4053, 4083 (The E8 is my favorite passenger locomotive. I've always passed on NYC E8's since I have 3Rd Rail ABA E7's. But I've always liked the Jade Green version of these E8's. I was hoping to see some Burlington E8's to pull my K-Line California Zephyr. Maybe someone will do a custom run of Burlingtons unless they are scheduled for a later catalog.)
2326770 PRR Vision Line Cabin Car #478166 (Heaven knows I don't need any more PRR Cabin Cars. But this Legacy Vision Line version sounds really cool and be different from any caboose I have. I would get both but I could spend that cost on a locomotive! I'll be happy with one.)
2228510 Western & Atlantic Freight Expansion Pack (This set would be cool to add to my Post War General Set!)
2329170 Hot Coco NE Caboose w/Deck (Not completely sold on this but it looks similar to something I saw on a roadside before and had wanted to model. This looks like the one I saw. It's a maybe though.)
I also liked the Penn Central GP20's, but I bought two custom Lionel Penn Central GP30's just a few months ago for nearly $150 less.
Oh, and I entered the drawing for the new Big Boy. Which includes an IRS 1099 form that comes with it!

Though I have a very limited focus because of the theme of our layout, this is the 8th year since I will NOT being ordering from Lionel. They completely miss the mark with me.
ZIPPO.

I guess I am in the same camp as most of you……at this price point, factoring in , quality control, the long product wait time, and the fact I am pretty much at full capacity on my layout, this catalog offers nothing special in my eyes…..even the Area 51 products did not entice me!

I think it's a hard sell right now for anything in a train catalog even if the prices were reasonable. We just went through a year where everything was expensive. We have literally been paying double for many items for over a year now and while some easing has been seen, we are not out of the woods yet. It's hard to justify any kind of top dollar prices on hobbies right now.
And it feel like there is just a fundamental change from just a few years ago. The last time the Big Boy was released, there were threads with many pages long discussing it before and after it was delivered. Same with others like the Empire State Express, Gold Polar Express Berkshire, etc. There was this energy and excitement about the releases where people who didn't order where excited and happy about and eager to hear about the trains from those who did.
There is none of that now. Something big has changed.
