There’s only one hobby shop in San Diego county that I know of. There are a couple small shops north of here in San Bernardino and Orange counties. But all of them are one to two and a half hours away. After investigating I found that none of them do repairs, so I haven’t taken the time to visit them yet. I had hoped to develop a customer relationship with one of them but they don’t service what they sell.
Luckily there is a MTH repair guy who operates about twenty minutes from me. I haven’t worked with him yet until I discover a problem with any MTH locomotives.
So in the meantime, ever since we moved here five years ago, I’ve continued to shop at two of my former local favorites, JusTrains of Delaware and Nicholas Smith.

I'm a 12 minute drive from Nicolas Smith Trains. Sounds dangerous! It certainly is, Adam. I was there a lot and spent a lot of my kids inheritance and several meals. I tried sending my kids to public schools rather than Catholic schools to have more train money.

Charles Ro is the closest at a 2 1/2 hour drive. Not so local so we seldom go there.

Roundhouse South is an MTH repair station. As far as I know the closest Lionel repair station is Zitnik Trains in Pinellas Park, about a 3 hour drive or 6 hour round trip, for me.

My son found out about a nearby train shop from a co-worker. It is about 30 minutes away; and he is going to drive me there this morning. I did not know about it - I don't think it is a conventional store with a name. Up to this point, I was not intending to make any significant purchases; however, I will check it out - it features pre and post war items - I may come home with some equipment. (I have a wish list.). Alfred

Alfred, you’ve got a good son. Going to a train store is always fun. Let us know about the shop, if you buy anything, and if you like it.

Since this thread was started, my closest train hobby shop closed, Mohawk Valley Railroad. Not sure how far/who is the next closest O gauge hobby shop to me.

Gryboski Trains in Scranton is about 1/2 hour.
English's Model Railroad Supply in Montoursville, Pa is 1 hour. English is home of Bowser Manufacturing for anybody familiar with HO. My summer home/hunting camp is halfway there so, it works for me.

My son had found out about an outlet with pre and post war equipment. (See my post above.) We went there today and spent one and one half hours. There were two warehouses. They were filled with tables and tables of equipment – not in any particular order. It was great to handle the items; and the owner and reps were very attentive in trying to locate what was of interest to you. I need to go back and do more investigating. I found the loco section and the rolling stock was all over the place, with accessories sprinkled in. I did not have time to really investigate the passenger cars. There was some really nice stuff in great condition. I will be going back – but not too soon, because I lightened my wallet this trip. More recollections to come. Alfred

Americas Best Train and Hobby Shoppe. Itasca, IL
Great store, very lucky to be so close which is about a 15 minute drive.
Not only trains, but all the modeling tools and consumables for almost any situation. In other words, a real hobby shop.
