Just ordered the graphics from Highball. My only worry is that they may be too large for this engine, but I will figure out away to use them.
Thanks for the tip Tom!

Adam, I was thinking and if I was doing this I would leave the engine as a dummy and run it with a different powered unit.
If I remember correctly you have a Lionel B&M RS-3 that I think would look good with this engine.
For good or ill, that’s my 2 cents worth.

Not bad thinking Joe. This is meant to be a low cost project so that may indeed be the best out forward. Love the idea of pairing it with my MTH B&M SW-9.
I think that is settled!
If I someday come across the parts I need to make it powered for the right price I may then make a change.

Your work is very interesting. I have never weathered any loco or rolling stock, or refurburshed any equipment. I am enjoying the detailed updates. The clearcoat that you mentioned - is it polyurethane or acrylic - in a spray? Alfred

This is my first attempt to redo a loco as well, so I'm learning as I go.

No painting today because it was too humid. I did order the decals, so that’s progress. As an aside, I decided to take a look at the two switcher engines I got on eBay for about $50. One of them has some issues with its gears but otherwise seems OK, but this one is solid and runs like a champ. It also has a mechanical bell! So, although my plan to harvest parts for from these for the F3 has failed, at least I have a new engine out of it. Here is a photo and a link to a short of it running. It has magnatration and is just a solid engine. Im a bit surprised I got such a good price actually. youtube.com/shorts/qcHTLoWPkKw?feature=share

Been following your build and it is very interesting, love the way your doing it. Hooking it up with another B&M loco would be cool. I think the switcher would be the best bet. Some cab units were always used as switchers when their life on the main line came to a end. Can't wait to see the final product.

Me too Dave! Feels like a long way to go yet but hoping to make progress later this week. I also orders some black and silver paint or the undercarriage and trucks. Trying to match the prototype as much as I can.

When you have the decals, don’t worry about trimming them…cut them up well! The more separate pieces the better you can manipulate placement on the engine. They will likely be too large, but some creative cutting may help.

Coat of red is on. Might need a small amount of touch up but I think one coat will be enough. I'm going to let it dry for a few days. Not that I have a choice as it will be a few days before the decals arrive anyway. Going to focus on the trucks, frame, pickups and lighting in the meantime. Planning to keep this as a dummy unit (thanks for the idea Country Joe!) and will run it with my B&M SW9.

A very involved project. I am glad it is going well. Did you know that the livery for the Norfolk And Western was Maroon and Gold? They used streamlined 4-8-4 J Class locomotives. Alfred
