Just realized that we need a couple of additional Legacy controllers. Looked at Charles Rho website and charging station and remote are $299 and change. Oh boy.
Is this what we need? The grandkids are coming over to run their engines. One Lionel remote won’t do the job.
We could use MTH remotes but prefer to use Lionel for Legacy features. But $300 each? Can’t we get a remote and use one charging station? If so, where?
Thanks. Need to order yesterday.

If you have the old TMCC system, I believe you can get a CAB-1L remote and have multiple handhelds running Legacy/TMCC engines. You could research this. I believe you have to hook up the TMCC base to your Legacy base with a special cable and run the trains with these remotes. They are on sale at Lionel for $134.99. I have been thinking about doing this, but have not taken the time to work it out. I have a friend who has MTH, Legacy and 3 CAB-1L and lets multiple people run trains, so I know it works.

Unfortunately, unless buying them second hand the best you can do for full Legacy is a 993 charging dock and Legacy controller.
Another option is get a Cab1L, sold just as a remote MSRP $149, which works with a Legacy base but lacks some of the features of a full Cab2.

Thanks Wood. We don’t have TMCC or that would be 5he ticket. Given the age of TMCC stuff I expect that the overall cost would approach Legacy.
Hopefully someone else will have some comments.
I appreciate your getting back to me this fast. Paula and I were checking out the Pocahontas and gold PE sets, pleased as could be at how they were running and I asked her for the remote to do something. The llight came on for both of us at the same time... PROBLEM.

Thanks Marty. Just saw your reply. Can’t see going with old technology to save $300 and my experience with used on this kind of thing is less than good. I guess it will be charging dock and controller. Hopefully these will last a long time.

Is the CAB1-L battery operated? Bill check this out. I do not think you need the TMCC base and it has to have batteries in it because it is handheld. Ergo, charge early and run all day. Call your favorite hobby store, they will have the answers. They are on sale in the Lionel store for $134.99 CAB-1L

I'm the least tech savvy person on this Forum but I would think that in the long run you're better off running everything from cell phone apps. My understanding is that everything else isn't going to be supported for much longer.

I'm the least tech savvy person on this Forum but I would think that in the long run you're better off running everything from cell phone apps. My understanding is that everything else isn't going to be supported for much longer. I only have limited experience of using cellphone and other device remote control train apps and MartyE is the person who can say whether the following 2¢ worth is correct.
To use the Lionel Apps (which as far as I know are the LCS WiFi and iCab), you need an LCS WiFi module. These run about $150-170 but, as I found to my cost, you also need the special connector to attach it to a Legacy base, which is sold separately. The manual says that the module will run up to 15 devices; however I have never tried it with more than one.
I think that those of us who prefer a CAB remote are stuck having to adopt and learn the WiFi control system just in case (as Howard Hitchcock has warned might happen) the CAB2 cannot be produced in future. Problem is that there's a learning curve associated with it and it's not as instinctive as the handheld remote. If you need a really quick addition to your existing control then the auxiliary base and remote might be a better bet than an entirely new method of control you have to learn.

What is needed is young people designing the WIFI and remote interfaces. Ages from 5 to 30? They have been brought up with this kind of stuff and have a much better feel for the usage of this kind of stuff. Older management of companies need to give the young people the requirements and let them design the interface. The electronics and micros are another story.

The LCS wifi along with the iCab app is the way to go. It's actually pretty fun and easy to operate. It quickly becomes just as familiar as your Cab2. I've found that the kids actually like it better!

Let’s see where we are:
MTH:
Remote. Have three
Wi-Fi Have this - Austin, age 4 handed the I-Pad to Mike Wolfe at York, Mike loaded app, handed back to Austin. Austin thanked Mike and before Mike could do anything more, Austin was running the train... immediately. I have the wi-fi unhooked right now because I don’t like it/have time to figure it out.
MTH can operate Legacy, but lose some features.
Lionel: Remote. Have one, need two more $600 or less if want Cab 1. Cab 1 doesn’t have all the features?
Wi-Fi. Is available. Maybe $250/300. All the kids have some kind of device and they, unlike Paula and me, understand it and have never known anything different.
So the problem seems to be Paula and me, not the grandkids.
Solution: Buy one Cab 2 charger and remote
Buy Lionel wi-fi and make it work
AND we then have four control systems, none of which we know how to run properly. AND we don’t have time to build a layout and learn all this stuff. Last night we couldn’t even figure out how to get the automatic rail sounds to come on on the 611 and gold PE to talk.
OR
Forget this O gauge stuff, sell all of it, and go to HO. No wonder HO is so popular.
The boat that I fish on just left Fort Pierce, FL on its way to Key West leaving Key West tomorrow for Isla Mujeres, Mexico. I oughta be there.
i think of Lee Willis being all conventional. Smart decision.
Thanks guys. Paula just said, “Do it.”
Oh, has anyone else here tried to do all this and succeeded? If so, I need some phone numbers.

The Cab1-L is not old technology and can be used with a Legacy base without additional hardware. It's made to work with the Legacy system. It's a less featured controller to look and feel like a Cab1 but with some Legacy functionality.

Thanks Marty. I understand now about the Cab 1 and it is probably the best value for the money. We have not done anything yet and hope to get to discuss it more tonight. I will tell Paula more about the Cab 1 option.
Paula switched to tree decorating and I am working with a newly installed ground rod and then passenger station platform installation.

I run only Legacy, which simplifies my situation. I have nothing against DCS, but I didn’t want the complications. I like the Legacy features.
I have two CAB-2’s and one CAB1-L. The 1-L is less capable, but you can access some features, like quilling whistle, with some special settings.
I also have the Lionel Wi-Fi module. I find it handy if I am up on the layout and need to activate/deactivate control blocks or run an engine. I do not use it for normal operations, because you have to look at the phone to find the function you want to activate. I can use much of the CAB-2 by feel.
