I just finished assembling an interurban car to accompany the McKeen trailer from last week. This is a 55-foot McKeen car, probably the most common type of the cars produced.
I started off with a basket case K-Line Budd Car that I bought off eBay for a pittance. I pulled off the cracked body shell, made some minor repairs to the trucks and got to work.
I made a 3D render of the drivetrain of the car and then designed a new body to fit on top of it.
I printed up the kit over the course of several days. Some modifications were required-- the corners of the Budd car frame had to be ground off to fit inside the new shell. I made some new sideframes to add a more McKeenish look to the power trucks as well as a new 3D printed coupler to accommodate the longer rear end.
Once I was satisfied with my design, I painted the body and decaled it for the Virginia and Truckee just like the mail trailer.
Here's the finished locomotive on the track.
Here's a view of the "windsplitter" front of the McKeen. I will add LED headlights to this engine when I eventually convert it to command control. I have to save up to buy more ERR boards so for right now I'm keeping it conventional with the original K-Line electronic E-Unit and incandescent interior lighting.
Check out the new power car running with the trailer!
