Love the MTH UP on this one. Easy pick. So do I. Mine is known in the household as "Ol' Smoky" for obvious reasons: It has three smoke units, two sound systems (through conversion from PS1) and I have lost count of how many wheels, powered axles and traction tires. (Eagle-eyed observers will note that in the photo one of them on the lead Alco had spun off.)
But, if it wins (as it deserves to), will this set up a heartbreaking contest with a Lionel UP Turbine, a classic in its own right???

Since these are my entries for the Big Country Conference, I will hold off voting until later today. But here are these mighty contestants making an appearance on my layout....
First up is a throwback to Lionel's postwar heydays... with the mighty Fairbanks Morse Train Master. The "demo" scheme (TM-1 and TM-2) was first released by Lionel as a Century Club II offering. And then many years later, TM-3 and TM-4 were released as catalog'd Legacy units. In real life, TM-1 and TM-2 eventually became Wabash locomotives, while TM-3 and TM-4 went out west as Southern Pacific units.
Next up is one stellar UP Coal Turbine model #8080 by MTH which -- when you look at it up close -- screams DETAILED scale modeling throughout its 54-1/2" length. This is the PS 3.0 version delivered in Summer 2019.

I think I am in love with this UP Coal Turbine. Such a cool set. How hard would it be to find and what can I expect to pay?

This is the PS 3.0 version delivered in Summer 2019. I think I am in love with this UP Coal Turbine. Such a cool set. How hard would it be to find and what can I expect to pay? You can expect to find one of the PS1 or 3 versions of the coal turbine at about the original list price; they come up on the auction sites from time to time. CAVEAT: I dunno who has the tooling for these (or the almost as mammoth MTH DDA40X), but its a toss-up whether they will ever be made again. Still, I would not expect at least the DDA40X to remain un-reissued - maybe by Lionel? Both are monster engines but MTH itself put out multiple versions of both, and so any new maker would have to cope with a somewhat saturated market for them. The PS3 version of the coal turbine has only one sound system, which is in the front unit and so the sound is a little deficient, in my books anyway. Also, MTH used the same sound set as for their propane-powered UP turbine, which is not a great match. Mine was a PS1 version that was converted to PS2 years ago by TAS, and I opted for sound in the lead unit and the middle turbine unit. I think a PS3 model could be similarly equipped as an upgrade but at a cost.

While neither of these appeal to me I voted for the FM demonstrators because I believe they will run on my layout and because I prefer a demonstrator to the UP.

The FM Demonstrator is one of the nicest paint jobs in our hobby. The FM was introduced first for O-Gauge by Lionel in the early 50's. I still have mine that I purchased with paper route money.

I waited nearly 3 1/2 years for my Coal Turbine to be delivered, so it gets my vote!

I love train masters. Have six K-line Milwaukee and one original Demo, I think it was MTH. My vote is for the FM. Don

IT'S OVERTIME!
Overtime Round 1
The 4MU configuration of Lionel’s LEGACY Fairbanks Morse Trainmasters in the Demonstrator livery: TM-1, TM-2, TM-3 and TM-4 9 + 5 = 14 v. The MTH Premier Union Pacific Coal Turbine Locomotive #80 10 + 2 = 12
