Personally, I see no problem in taking names off a roster if they show no interest in participating. Especially if they have a whole year, 365 days, to just drop in and say Hello, or even just giving a thumbs up on a post. That's not asking a lot of a member, give some signs of participation.

PRR, we are good shoppers and the combination of our set-up fees, maintenance and hosting are thousands of dollars less than any competitor we could find. Any money we save is just a benefit to all who pay our bills.
The real point though is RULE #7. Either participate or go away. Pretty simple and a smart way to run a forum. Why have large membership numbers just to promote ghosts.

I may be wrong but I believe I read over on OGR they also delete inactive members. This was a few months ago.
Nope… keyword in their TOS states they “may” remove accounts that are inactive for an unspecified period of time. Whether they actually do it or not is an entirely different ballgame. As of this post, my account is still on their roster, yet I haven’t signed on there since early 2018. So they’re still selling ad space and sponsorship with inflated numbers. I got the boot too, a little over a year ago. In my case however, I probably deserved it. I got into some (cough, cough) 'hot water' concerning one of the teacher's pets. Finally had enough of that guy insulting new members (and old members and everyone else in between) and let the teacher know about it. Not very nicely either. Bye-bye, Mixed Freight! At any rate, once in a great while when I feel like torturing myself, I go to their website to see what's up. The main thing I notice since I got the ax is, that no advertisers appear anymore for me on the top of the pages I view. I used to like seeing the advertisers, that's where I started learning who had what that I could order from. I wonder if non-members, who never have been tossed off, get to see any of the advertisers listed? But more importantly, I wonder if the advertisers know that I'm not seeing their ads. Wonderful, eh? The advertisers all see me listed as a member, but don't realize I'm not seeing any of their ads. If you ask me, whatever they're paying to advertise on that site, they're not getting their money's worth.

I see them having been removed, but I don't have ad-blocker turned on over there. They are hidden when it is on

mixedfreight, I never understood why they let Hot Water get away with putting down people that only asked a question that he thought was stupid. Don

Okay, much as I don't care for them, I have to apologize to them. After checking, my ad blocker WAS the culprit. As I remember though, the ads disappeared from view right after I got my walking papers, so I simply figured it was something they did. Thanks for pointing that out. Modern technology strikes again!

When I lived in the Chicago area and attended the Dupage Train Show, HW had a table that he would sit at month after month. Same old stuff he would bring to sell and it would just sit there. Appeared to me to be a very lonely man at this Meet as each month when I would pass his table, hardly anyone stopped to chat. No wonder. In terms of the other guys, I guess some have a protected status. Really smart train man, but PR, not so much at least in my opinion. That style would not last two minutes here. But not to worry, I think we are safe.

One of our members who was deleted for inactivity is now back. Good news.

I see no problem in deleting inactive members !IF! they can be reactivated without issue.

Ads are then geared towards you based on those cookies. If you're not logged in, then they can't tell who to direct the ad towards.

Yup, I've been on the receiving end of some condescending replies from the hot water department. I'm no locomotive expert, but I've been certified for a few decades in mechanical trades and steam-plant operation, so go figure. I tried checking back there with no ad-blocker up and sure enough, I'm a "member" and can see the ads, but have no other access. I think deleting inactive OGF members is acceptable, and am happy to see folks welcomed back. Sometimes life just takes that time away from us when we least expect it. Dave

Websites plant cookies on your system based on your browsing preferences. Ads are then geared towards you based on those cookies. If you're not logged in, then they can't tell who to direct the ad towards. Cookies eventually take over your hard drive space. Then you get adware extreme. You can avoid all cookies if you use a VPN on your computer or smart phone. I use NordVPN and with that installed your web activity is not traceable. It drives Goodle ads nuts but his is my computer and not theirs to load up my hard drive with junk.

I see no problem in deleting inactive members !IF! they can be reactivated without issue. I’m not sure how that can be done. The impetus for deleting them in the first place was to lower storage costs. Once their account is “deleted” how would you “reactivate” it? It’s gone. Doesn’t make any sense to me.

Reactivated may be the wrong choice of word. Allowed to rejoin without penalty may be a better term.
