Pete brought this to mind when he posted an excellent solution to an issue his wife had about their new flooring in the living room and her desire to keep it from scratches caused by the track. He found a heavy duty table pad with a white underside that solved the problem.
It begs the question now that the Christmas season is rapidly approaching how many are planning a train under their Christmas Tree? We would love to, but two very large white dogs make it a problem for us. Our Christmas Tree is located in front of our picture window in the living room and the dogs like to look out to see what is going on outside. Their breed is very territorial and protective, so any train would be in the way (to say the least). Small price to pay for such loving pups. So, we get to enjoy other folks in our hobby and their Christmas Tree trains.
Please share with us your Christmas Tree train projects.

Brian, we have a similar challenge with our two dogs. However, we are going to give it a try this year and see how it goes. I’ve found that they are a bit scare of the trains so that might work in our favor. Will share pictures when the tree and train are up.

Laz just posted a terrific idea for a living room cofee table layout for those who may have our issue as well. Check it out on the "Members from Other Gauges" thread.

This year no real tree so no train. Just no available space. However we do have this which will sit on a piece of furniture. LOL!! Gary.

Marty, I agree, but tell that to Bailee and Cooper.

In my household, Mrs. requires a real tree of no less than 8 feet height. I prefer an artificial one of predictable dimensions that does not “shed” all over the track and the rug.

I should end up with 6 loops if the layout comes together as planned. Stay tuned.
Your post reminds me, last year I had some Std. Gauge switches on the Christmas layout that I wanted to keep from moving. I made the executive decision to simply screw them to the hardwood floor. I figured once I backed out the screws and took the layout away, the wife would never notice a couple little holes in the corner. It worked. So far.

I must be the oddball here. Growing up I never had trains around the tree, never received trains as a Christmas gift. Growing up the layout was for the most part built and fully stocked with trains. I just don't associate Christmas and trains together.

I believe that this has a great deal to do with how Dad and Mom looked at trains and Christmas, Gary. I think it also has to do with the popularity of model trains at the time you were raised. The 40's and 50's, model trains were the hotest Christmas gift for boys, and many homes had trains under the Christmas Tree. The 60's and up, not to much for young boys. Since 2004 and the Polar Express and the Lionel PE sets, there has been a big resurgence of trains and Christmas.
My Dad was a HUGE model train fan, so it is not surprising that we had a train under the Christmas Tree (a layout as well).

I don't even remember many presents there until Christmas morning since those came from Santa.

Well I grew up in the 80's and while I did play and love trains. Hot ticket items for me were video games (Atari) and handheld electronic games. Playing Pack-man on Christmas was what I remember.

Well, we have that in common. My little brother was even an early adopter on PlayStation so I played with that a fair amount. But I didn't have trains or know anyone who did. So God knows why I'm into them as an adult. Anyway, I like having them around the tree now!
