Thanks - isn't that just the way we all think sometimes, but to see it experienced for the first time on that little girl's face truly IS priceless.

Off to Florida on the Silver Star to see my brother and his wife. We catch the train in Newark so don't get to enjoy the lounge at NYP. They are slowly restoring the station in Newark, moved all the fast food out of the main waiting/ticket hall and currently restoring the benches with a PRR logo on them. They've got back to the "traditional dinning" on the Silver service but while you get a waiter and a table cloth its still not like it was in the days of the Heritage diners. Let you all know how it goes.

Already booked our 2024 Amtrak trip. Philadelphia to Chicago on the Cardinal and Chicago to Winslow AZ (and return) on the South West Chief. Bedroom accommodations on both routes. We will be visiting the out of the way Grand Canyon North Rim and staying at the Grand Canyon Lodge Western Cabins. While train travel is slow it is relaxing, comfortable and in our case private. No problem with taking food and drink aboard and you don't get searched like a convict in a prison.

I rode quite a bit in my younger years. The Capitol, Lake Shore Limited, Palmetto and many numbered trains on the Empire Service Corridor. Even slept and rode the Executive Sleeper out NYP.
I used to deadhead from Croton, NY to Buffalo and back for free. There was trick to it, but as long as you were a railroad union member, the crew let you ride.
Later, I rode the Palmetto to Washington and back on a Metro-Liner from Newark, NJ. Numerous times to spend a day drinking at an Irish bar in DC. The Conductor on this run was a friend that regularly rode a train I ran out of Hoboken to his home in Waldwick. Professional courtesy all around!
My last rip on Amtrak was the Silver Meteor, Newark to Orlando and back. That was 24 years ago….

Just for reference we have over 20 trips on Amtrak to date and that would mean close to 70 different segments. We have traveled cross country N-S and E-W. They treat you like a criminal when you fly and like ladies and gentlemen when you take the train. I for one refuse to be lowered to the level of an animal just to fly.

Update, rode the palmetto to fayetteville nc, not recommended. Recently rode the high speed trains in italy, on time clean, pleasant staff, comfortable ride, hey suits at amtrak, there is much to be learned.

Just added another Amtrak trip a few weeks ago but this was a small one. It was the Acela at Metropark, NJ to Philadelphia and back. It was only a 50 minute trip and the train was at 125 MPH a good portion of the way. At Philadelphia we boarded the Market Frankfort line and the Norristown high speed line with a group of rail fans. Having an Amtrak "Select Membership" we have access to the First Class lounge that made for a very comfortable wait for the train returning. Its similar to the first class lounges at the Airport, with complimentary soft drinks, coffee and snacks. Before train departure is announced an elevator there takes you right down to the platform about 10 minutes before boarding. Our next Amtrak train trip will be to Arizona in a few months. It is a three day two night trip but for us it is an enjoyable experience on the train seeing the USA at ground level. We always have a private bedroom with bath so between the trips to the dining car for meals and to the sightseer lounge the trip seems to go quickly. Amtrak long distance is for people certainly not in a hurry but for those that want to see the USA having comfortable leisurely transportation.

Leaving next week for Salt Lake City from Denver. Going to see my son who plays for CU in the college hurling finals.
Amtrak just canceled the train . Leaving me hanging. Thank's a lot Amtrak. This is just another reason you don't see Amtrak on my layout !

Only once on a Amtrak owned passenger train.
Use to ride the Puget Sound Sounder when I lived near Seattle.
Rode the Amtrak Cardinal from Cincinnati to Washington DC.
As a youngster, twice from Seattle to Chicago, once on the Great Northern and once on the Milwaukee.

Counting the days till APRIL 12, 2024. Going from Phila to Portland Oregon, then to Vancouver Canada on AMTRAK. Then I board the CANADIAN from Vancouver to Toronto. I try not to think about it as I get so excited I almost pee myself every time. This is my DREAM TRIP since I was a little boy. I am mainly excited about the Canadian. Four trains to get to Vancouver and ONE to get back to Toronto. Amtrak is great you just have to build in big time between stops as they are almost ALWAYS late with varying times. Between 30 minutes and 9 hours.
