For me, it was Christmas time (1965-1969?) and my parents and I made another of our frequent trips to SEARS, which my father loved to buy from. They had all kinds of model trains set up in their Long Island NY store back in 1965-1969 that I can recall and one year I saw the apple of my eye there. The Lionel 11490 set. Of course my drooling was cut short by my mother declaring we need to go look at and buy some wall paper. A few days later a brown UPS truck pulled up to the house with my mother again declaring "Oh thats my wallpaper from SEARS". Imagine my shock as they let me remove the brown shipping paper, as I spotted the classic Lionel Icon/Emblem (black and orange oval around Lionel name). I dubbed thee "The Silver Streak" and forever etched that moment into my memory forever.  |

I have 2 favorite train memories.
The first is Christmas 1954 when Santa left a New York Central F3 AA set along with the B unit. That sleek diesel had Magne Traction and could pull every freight car I had with ease. I've been a New York Central fan ever since.
The second was the year my dad told me I was getting coal for Christmas, and I did. It was Lionel coal and went with a 97 coal loader that he had found in someone's garbage. He'd repaired it, cleaned it up, and made a controller for it. What a relief, I didn't think I would actually get coal but I was a little worried anyway. When I got Lionel coal and the coal loader it was a great surprise and a very happy Christmas for me. I don't remember what year it was but my best guess is 1957 or 58.

It's a tie between receiving a Lionel 2037 from my step brother that had been in his family for years and my family getting me the Lionel Peanuts Halloween train for my 50th Birthday.
Nobody in the family gives me train related stuff for my Birthday,Fathers Day,Christmas etc etc etc. So it was a big surprise to receive the set.

Fir usre the Christmas that I received the beautiful Sanre Fe F3's with the matching Lionel Lines aluminum passender cars. Off the charts terrific Christmas morning.
That set got a whole lot of use, more than nay other set I had as a kid. |

My favorite memory is Dads last Christmas were he knew I was getting into "O" gauge and got me a NYC ABA F3 MTH set. It was PS1, but very special. Later had it converted twice to ERR command board and sound so I could always hold those memories. I remember the size of the package, wrapped, and thinking Dad got me some hiking boots.

Vince, what Sears store did you go to? We used to go to the Korvettes on Glen Cove Rd in Carole Place. Great memories from everyone posting.

What was the store/super market where you pulled your car around after paying for your groceries and the bags would come rolling down on conveyor belts where some teenager would load them into your car? I always thought those conveyor belts were amazing.

I remember Korvettes on Glen Cove Rd. When I was young I bought Heartland baseball statues there and when I was older I bought lots of record albums there. I even worked there for a while when I was about 19 or 20 years old. I don't remember a supermarket with a conveyor belt. |

The ones from my parents of course. A Marx 999 freight set, 1949 2025 w/green passenger cars and the one I begged for 1951 NYC F3 freight set. I have the Lionel's and replaced the 999 set.

Vince that supermarket doesn't come to mind, but that sounds cool. Korvettes was the big place for us. We did go to Roosevelt Field as well, but you guys should see what it looks like now! Massive, like a little city.

It's at least 20 years since I last went to Roosevelt Field. It's hard to believe it's doing well. Malls are dying. Our mall in Vero Beach is in sad shape.

So did you guys ever go to the Mayfair shopping Center on Jericho Turnpike.
There was an A&P, Pizza Amorie, a Chinese Restaurant, and a movie theater where I saw "Destroy All Monsters".
Also, across the street from that shopping center or near it was a wrecked ferris wheel.
I always wondered what the story was behind it.

Vince, I just looked it up and it's in Commack. I didn't have any reason to go there so I don't remember it but there's a good chance I drove past it at some point. I don't remember the ferris wheel either.
