One thing I noticed when running my Boxcars with doors open, that awful shiny black plastic look in these empties as the run pass. Then there are the gondolas with flooring same color as car or black. Solution: Taking boxcars screws from bottom off and dropping floor(s). Taking wheel sets off, washing floors with soapy water, rinse and dry. On Gondolas, I just spray the floors with electronic cleaner rather then washing. Then tape inside walls and overlap with paper the sides. Flat cars can also be done same way and using same technique. I then use Rust Oleum camo sand spray. After drying, a latex Brown thinned wash over boards, dry and a final wash of thinned black to bring out individual boards and grains. One can further age boards with black, greys, etc. chalks. When satisfied, seal with a clear matte spray. Hope this helps. It also in a small way, a start in weathering.

That makes them look so much better. The weathering is perfect. The painting also gives depth to the interior of the car.
Good job.

So how did you make the loads Joe?

So how did you make the loads Joe? For the car in the photos above I cut 2 pieces of white foam core to fit and used a fine point black pen and straight edge to draw the lines so it looks like boxes. I carefully printed ALLIED on each box. When I do the next group of boxcars I'll use the paint program on my computer to create the boxes and printing. I can size it for printing on my inkjet printer with as many as I can fit on a sheet of printer paper. Then I'll cut it and glue the printed loads to foam core like I did with this load. I'm not entirely happy with this load. I think I can do better with the next cars I do.

Thanks for the explanation Joe. It looks really good, if you feel you can improve on that, I really want to see it.

These are great ideas. I was wondering what to do with the inside of my special run “MORON” (MONON) scale boxcar I succumbed to buying because it’s an old Purdue Boilermaker frat house joke. I’ll take a leaf out of Country Joe’s book and load it up with deflated Indiana Hoosier footballs! Harking back to K-Line days, they made some great PFE reefers with scale fruit inside. Unfortunately I have only one.

The one mistake I made was that there should be 2 pallets side by side rather than one. Other than that I think it looks very good. I think it's a truism that we are our own worst critic.

Neat ideas guys. Joe I think you should cut one or two individual boxes and glue them in in between the doors.
