Looking over my model vehicle inventory this morning, what I found interesting was we have a collection within a collection. By that I am referring to the number of specialty vehicles within our collection. Since I started collecting model vehicles for the layout back in 1996, we have accumulated 16 Woodies. Seems that I am really drawn to them. Why? Maybe it is the fact that they are different and long gone. Maybe because they were prevalent in the period we model. Maybe they are really cool looking models. But, probably, all of the above. I just thought that it is an interesting observation.

Speaking of Car Shows, when living in Illinois, I would attend with friends the Chicago Car Show at the McCormick Center and their "First Nighters Event". It was a black tie affair and the ticket fees went to charity. All the top execs of the car manufacturers were there to speak with. There was gourmet food at every display. It was an event that I looked forward to every year. I remember an event, also at McCormick Place but maybe different from the one you describe, which was an annual rod 'n custom car show. As far as I can remember any more it was held in the depths of November, and took place in that part of the complex, built after the 1960s fire, that is called the Lakeside Center. On the other hand, maybe we are thinking of different parts of the same Chicago Auto Show event.
Anyway, I went to it less for the full-scale cars than the model car championship, which I took very seriously and geekishly - enough to win it some time nearly 50 years ago. How time flies - and things change.

Collections within collections are fun. And they can be like going from Lion Chief to Vision line. Just think Pink.

"Just think Pink."
This came to mind when I thought of this topic. You and Paula are pink Brooklin people.

At breakfast this morning, we were having a discussion about COLOR, or more especially, the color of model vehicles and their impact for a layout. Our City is built on three levels. The furthest back is of course, the highest level. A phenomenon so to speak is by placing models on this level, the ones with darker colors get lost in the mix, while those with lighter colors are much more noticeable. Even as you approach the levels closer to the front, the lighter colors appear to stand out more.
Does that mean we should purchase all light colored model vehicles, no, but if you overload your selections with dark colors, they will not stand out as well. I now concentrate more on lighter colored vehicles as I have enough of the darker colors.
Just my thought for today.

Here are 3 more Franklin Mint 1:43 models...a 1950 Nash Rambler, a 1950 Chrysler Town and Country, and a 1956 Chevy Nomad wagon. I think these are very good models. The Rambler is considered the first American "small car". It was a "rag top" convertible with solid metal sides. Only 700 of these last of the Chrysler woodies were built. They used white ash trim over painted metal. The Nomad ( and Pontiac Safari) were based on a Corvette "dream car" made for the GM Motorama (along with a roadster and a fastback). The viewing public loved the look, so GM gave it a 3-year try on these full size wagons. Its downfall was the high cost, plus the fact it was only a "two-door".

Thanks for you post, Joe. Very informative as always. Over the years, somehow I picked up two of the Chrysler Woodies. They are indeed beautiful models. Both are on our layout, but separated far enough away from each other that you would probably not notice that there are two. The photo below shows one of them on 34th St. behind the green & cream taxicab.

The woodies that you collect and show Brian are some of the best imo.
I remember as a kid seeing them and being really attracted to them because of the wood, seems odd I know because I was really Into hot rods at the time but the Woodies hold a special place for me.

Interesting Dave, there was never a defined plan to acquire woodies, it just happened over time. What made it more interesting is the variety of them available.
I wonder how many other members collect woodies as well.

Interesting Dave, there was never a defined plan to acquire woodies, it just happened over time. What made it more interesting is the variety of them available. I wonder how many other members collect woodies as well. OK, I'll take the bait - although what I have is certainly not a collection, and what I do is not collecting. I just occasionally adopt suggestions by Brian and/or Bill.
This is a Woodie that I recently received after looking for something else in the depths of Lockdown Lethargy a few months back. In fact, at the time I was distracted enough not to realize that it was a pre-order. I know nothing about the "Goldvarg Collection," but I did like the look of it. This is a resin model, beautifully finished in all respects but no opening panels and of course it's not metal, so feather light to pick up. Still, the photos do its finish justice and it's a nice display piece:
We've had examples of Chevy Fleetmasters before. This one is from 1948 and is in Satin Green. P.S. I stand to be corrected but I doubt Chevy made the matching board on the roof rack!

They have been around for over 30 years and make highly detailed models. Your new Woody is a gem, Andy. I like the color and style. Thanks for posting this information.

To keep up today you have to have chrome chrome, not a streak of paint. We noticed an upgrade by Brooklin last year/ this year. Competition in this market is being driven by... the Chinese, imagine that.
There also appeared to be an increase in the percentage of limited editions that were released.

Andy that is a very nice looking vehicle. We have 1-2 Woodies.
Paula is to pink as Brian is to Woodies. At least pink is bright.

How true, Bill. But, you are ahead of this game. There are more Woodies out there than pink models.
