Thanks guys. I am thinking of building a catenary system. There is a method that uses readily available Marklin HO catenary wires. I just need to design and build poles to hang them from... Tom Are you thinking of a North-Eastern style catenary or simpler type? I've also hoarded some Marklin HO catenary for some Milwaukee type using dowels and brass rod. FW

Yes, I was thinking more along the lines of a western style like the GN or Milwaukee Road. I am exploring the use of old Buco tinplate poles too. They are a bit simple but some with some work, they would look fine... Tom

You guys contemplating catenary system are bravely ambitious. You have my respect. If you have ever seen the Marklin HO catenary system, you would wonder why they don’t make it in O scale. It is very simple and easy to set up. If you have a number of electric locomotives in your collection, it would justify building a catenary system. It adds to the interest of electric locomotive operation... Tom

Would be very hard to retrofit, Tom.

I was hoping to find a source for metal I beam when I attempted my homemade catenary. Ended up using dowels for poles and welding rod soldered together. Two sections of the layout are still under wire but purely cosmetic. Makes a perfect TMCC signal booster when connected to house ground.

Nice. I am sure there is metal channel stock out there that is purposed for other uses. Just need to research it and find a source. Some sort of aluminum extrusion might work.
I picked up some Bing trolley poles that I can make into workable catenary with some modifications. Mostly height extensions to make room for a two or three wire catenary style. The posts and arms are plenty stiff and made with quality.
The TMCC booster is a great idea. The catenary I have envisioned, will have adjacent transmission lines that could be used as a antenna. Interesting.
