Years ago, the huge 3-piece MTH UP Coal Turbine #80 caught my eye, but somehow never quite found its way onto my roster. Well that changed earlier this week when MTH's new re-issue of the Coal Turbine #8080 arrived from Clyde & Dianne at Stockyard Express.
This locomotive is quite an impressive statement piece on any layout and measures nearly 55" in length. Turbine sounds and crew dialog emanate from the lead unit, while a room-filling triple-stream of smoke emanates from the lead and auxiliary turbine units which run as a DCS lash-up. (The aux unit by itself is nearly the length of my Lionel VisionLine NYC Niagara!!!) A small cable connects the trailing tender unit to provide rear electrocoupler and tail-light functions. All in all, this locomotive is bound to catch a few eyes when visitors come to enjoy trains on your layout. It is a friendly monstrosity indeed.
My locomotive operated flawlessly out of the box... although the sounds of the unit could be a bit louder. However, with other locomotives and/or sound-cars running on the layout at the same time, the sound level of this unit on max-volume is just about perfect.
Below are 10 photos of the MTH UP Coal Turbine #8080 which I captured quickly with my iPhone last night as this unique locomotive made its maiden journey on my Allegheny & Pacific Rwy. Enjoy!!!

Hey guys, until I get organized producing train videos again... here's a pre-production video from MTH produced earlier this year. The turbine sounds give you the feeling you're at an airport instead of a model railroad!!!

I was looking at it at York in April. I always liked that monstrosity! Congrats on the new addition to the roster!

It is interesting to see the Alco lineage in the locomotive carried over from the PAs design.

Thanks for sharing. Its one I was seriously thinking of adding, but the size of it would overwhelm my layout. Now you stirred interest again. I love that monster.

Hi David
We received one at the shop and it was pulled and tested as all locomotives are. We had 3 issues, one of them being lower volume than we like, the second the second unit wouldn't move, and third a traction tire off (it seemed stretched or too big). Fortunately a factory reset solved the second issue although in conventional we did have a little problem getting everyone in sync. The traction tire was replaced and it is ready for the customer. You are correct though this thing is a beast and absolutely stunning. This engine deserves a better sound system though for its size.

As you know David I have been looking hard at this BEAST. Thanks for the great pics. Looking forward to your video. We by from Clyde and Dianne as well. Great people! With the lower volume that Marty mentioned would this unit be somewhat helped out by Fat Boy speakers, a richer fuller sound would at the very least be a nice compliment to #80. What do you think?
Regards,
Gary.

David, That is quite the engine. Don't have the curvature to accommodate, but I am glad you do and can share this beauty. It will be a real eye catcher on your layout. Congrats on your purchase.

David, nice looking engine, great layout to. I think that engine would tip my layout over. Look forward to a video of it running on your layout.

I am glad to see the interest in this model. There are now three recent threads in which it is mentioned. In the one I started on having “twins” I fessed up to owning two 3rail versions, the first being the original PS1 version that I had converted to PS2 by TAS.
In the course of writing about that, I remembered that the conversion resulted in there being two sound systems, one in the lead unit and one in the turbine. They are not in perfect synch, whether deliberately or otherwise, although that only means that they start up separately. I now don’t think that the later PS2 version has a separate sound system in one of the two units and, yes, I remember that I noticed that the sound was a little inadequate for such a large model. It’s the earlier converted model that I run most and it is known as “Ol’ Smoky” in my family for obvious reasons when they see it running.
I also accused MTH of being cheap by just using their existing gas turbine sound files in these models, which means that in both of mine there are actually propane turbine announcements/crewtalk, which is a little jarring. Maybe they have changed that in PS3; I’ll be interested to know what other people find. In any case, after reminding myself of the history of the prototype, I remember that the turbine itself was the same as in UP’s gas-fueled engines but used pulverized coal. It was a failed experiment because the fly ash from this fuel played havoc with the turbine blades.
Anyway I am glad MTH has “recycled” the tooling for UP8080 for what I think is the fourth issue of the model.

Hi David We received one at the shop and it was pulled and tested as all locomotives are. We had 3 issues, one of them being lower volume than we like, .... This engine deserves a better sound system though for its size. Marty, I agree 1,000%. For the size of this monstrosity, the sound is almost underwhelming. It's OK if you've got other sounds contributing to the overall affect in the train or on the layout. But CLEARLY, the middle unit and/or tender could use sound... and would add to a nice multi-dimensional, stereophonic effect -- the kind we're becoming accustomed to hearing in Lionel locomotives with multiple speakers. My Lionel Great Northern ABBBBA configuration with multiple Bass Sound units FAR surpasses the sound quality of the MTH Coal Turbine. But then again, the coal turbine is basically a jet-engine sound lacking the variation we often hear in Lionel's implementation of Railsounds. David
