I am starting a new paint project today. I have about eight cars I want to paint, but I am waiting for the boxcar red paint from Scalecoat.
However, I did have a can of C&NW yellow that works for a project I can do now. The subject is a boxcar in the color of the Akron, Canton and Youngstown railroad. The only back ground on this car is that I had one in N scale as a kid. It was an Atlas product I believe. I always like the color and lettering on the car, so I decided to do one in O scale.
Using a Weaver 2 rail car, I converted it to three rail by grinding down the truck bolster on the bottom of the car frame. This was needed as simply adding the three rail trucks, would cause the car to sit too high. I used Weaver trucks made by MTH and they work great.
Then I removed the car bottom from box body. The doors were popped out. I left the roof walk on as the paint doesn’t have a problem getting underneath.
The Scalecoat II paint doesn’t require primer so I went ahead with out it. The yellow paint had a slightly difficult time coating the black plastic. I should have primed it with grey primer first...
So, this is what it looks like now. The decal set, from K4 Decals, are printed in a slightly blue/purple ink. According to the K4 instructions, the yellow paint will cause the lettering to look red, as that is the correct color for the lettering on the car. It will be interesting to see if it works...
Just waiting for the paint to dry now. It may need another coat yet. The Scalecoat paint takes a day to dry and harden.
Stay tuned....
By the way, as I was outside painting the car, I heard a sudden loud roar of jet engines. It was a F-15 that was flying airspace protection while President Trump is staying in Bedminster, NJ for the weekend. The fighter was in pursuit of a small private plane The small plane was passing over my house. As the F-15 made wide circles at low speed, shepherding the plane to a local airport, the noise was tremendous and you could hear the F-15 as it flew miles off and returned.
It was a sight to behold, watching that fighter fly over...four times! Made me proud to see that!
