I recall reading about the Mayor of Harrison and a armed contingent of citizens, barricaded the bridge with sandbags and wire during the Newark riots in 1967... It was a swing bridge, so I don’t know why the didn’t just open it to prevent traffic across it... Tom I was 5 in 1967 and barely remember that year but it may be possible that the bridge didnt swing open at that time? ? ? ?

I don’t know. The PRR bridges at “Dock” and the EL bridge at Broad St were working...still are, but little or no river traffic now. Likely the bridge was working back then....

Here is an aerial photo of the bridges Joe is taking about. Joe’s bridge is the one in the center of the pic, 5th bridge from the top. There are seven bridges, all movable, in the picture. Three are railroad bridges, Erie, Lackawanna and PRR. The biggest span in the upper middle is Interstate 280. Newark Penn Station is at the bottom of the pic.
