Who uses different colors of ballast sides gray? For me I use crushed walnut shells and leave them brown color. That's the look I like.I do understand it's not realistic. I'm sure there is some brown stone somewhere along the rails maybe. So when u see pics of my layout u will always see brown ballast.

I use gray for 2 reasons. First, it's what I've seen so it looks right to me. Second, I use FasTrack on my layout and it comes with gray molded ballast so adding gray stone ballast looks good. I've only done this freight station siding so far but I like the way it looks and will eventually do the rest of the layout.

I use gray for my Pennsy mainline and branchlines. Ballast (what little there will be) in the steel mill yard will be black.

I mix 3 colors Drk grey, Light grey, and tan color. equal parts. Then stain it with India ink... Yards I just use black ballast. all woodland scenic... although I met a guy from York that made some really elite ballast … made me want to start all over again!

I find that ballast can be such a personal choice unless you are going for a completely prototypical look when a layout mimics the real place. It's nice too see the different colors for different locations. As for our future layout the entire North American Continent will be represented therefore we will have to use different colors for certain areas or mix up our own ballast.

I used Brennan’s. I know yards are frequently different than main lines, but I was content to have one color. My glue mix had some brown paint in it.

Chicken grit isn't to bad. I use it at far ends of the layout. It's different colors and sizes... Also pretty inexpensive...

On my previous layouts I used crushed walnuts. Tan in color can be stained to any color and costs about 15 bucks for a 50 lb. bag. Found at pet stores used for bird cages. I still gotta put it down on this layout?

I use Woodland Scenic course light grey mixed with black in a 4 grey to 1 black proportion. Then seal it with water, white glue and a light water base brown paint mixture I concocted at Sherwin Williams.

When I finally get to the stage of ballasting - it will be Dennis Brennan's brand. I purchased 3 bags on a York trip a few years ago. Hopefully it's still within shelf life??Lol

Did any of you use or will any of you use something like the ballast king car? With the amount of track on my layout, the $200 would have been a good investment.
