The 30 pages of Vision Line products didn't interest you? No, It just seemed to be the same engine painted in 30 different colors... Plus I have 7 GS class locomotives already... 6 of them Lionel. Do we need another? I thought Vision Line meant uniquely tooled engines... The GS1 was the only engine I purchased... I felt it should have been the only engine labeled as a true Vision Line Product.

I don't have the desire or money for any of those locos but I think I have seen the same type of thing in catalogs of MTH, the same loco used many times for different road names and color schemes that did not exist but have not heard/read any criticism of that.

MTH has received plenty of criticism for not introducing product based on "new tooling". That being said, the issue/trend with Lionel's VisionLine products has been a noted decline in the "uniqueness" of VisionLine offerings. VisionLine originally started during the Jerry Calabrese years as a re-branding of Dick Kuhn's JLC series of highly detailed locomotive offerings. During the early VisionLine years, Lionel's stated goal was to introduce new, never-before-offered locomotive models with unique, high-end features that would eventually percolate their way down to high-end locomotive products and then even standard models in Lionel's product line. It was a laudable goal, but seldom if ever did that happen.
That's why you're hearing the huge level of disappointment with Lionel's 30 pages of VisionLine products in their latest 2020 Volume 1 catalog. That was perhaps the biggest example yet that Lionel has diluted its VisionLine "brand".

OK. My greatest disappoint with Lionel today is the lack of, IMO, products at lower price levels that might attract younger people that play with trains rather than collect trains. I really have no interest in rolling stock that costs much more than Menards. Locomotives in the price range of the VisionLine are just a dream.
Now a question. How many of those locos does Lionel really expect to sell?

How many of those locos does Lionel really expect to sell? That is the $64,000 (or more) question. There must be a market for VL models or they would not keep making them. Apart from the VL Centipedes, of which many ended up being blown out at much lower prices than either the MSRP or pre-order prices, every VL issue I can think of has sold well and some (like the GE Evo) have commanded very high prices in the secondary market. Somebody must have an idea of how many of each VL model has actually been produced; AFAIK Lionel's never given any public disclosure of the numbers. My guess is that these numbers, which obviously depend on pre-orders, have varied by model and may be several hundred to a couple of thousand each. That isn't based on anything scientific but a couple of things that have struck me are (1) when the VLBB came out, one main dealer posted a warehouse picture showing many pallets of them, which itself must have run to hundreds, and (2) another main dealer more recently commented that it liked VL models because selling them was a significant boost to the business's bottom line. P.S. Lionel's shipping schedule, which has never been very reliable, is now a complete BLANK, which I take to mean that they are having to revise everything in terms of when products are going to be available, VL or anything else. Not surprising.

Lionel didnt dilute the brand, they flushed it down the toilet. One may as well say that anything scale is now Vision Line. Theres nothing special about anything in that catalog

I've bought several Lionel items recently and I think their QC is very suspect. Legacy, Lion Chief+, needs work!

Buying Lionel products today is now a complete crap-shoot. They have zero QC. Couple that with their overseas factory having a complete disconnect with the expectations set at catalog time (i.e., colors off, features missing, shabby workmanship, etc...), I wouldn't be surprised if many of their BTO "pre-orders" were large dealers still ordering extra's on spec. From many comments made here on OGF, it's pretty obvious that folks are WAITING to see what's actually delivered BEFORE committing their dollars.
