We are real close to having all the Open Hearth columns finished. Here are a few of the outer columns in the paint booth ready to get their coat of flat black.
More when I know it.

George, do you find making a lot of parts like these columns tedious?

George, do you find making a lot of parts like these columns tedious? Well, yes and no. It would be a lot worse if I did these individually, freehand. I find that constructing a jig or two is the answer. Doing that may take a bit of time upfront, but it pays off in the end. I used one for all the columns and made a jig for the cross-beams. Once you get started, it goes very quickly. And I really like the idea of producing a number of these that are very close in appearance.
Plus, I think about the end result. Any tedium is worth it if the outcome is good.

They are all painted - 11 outer columns, 5 inner, 1 center end.

Nice work on the columns George do you get your components from plastruct.

Nice work on the columns George do you get your components from plastruct. Plastruct and Evergreen. By the way, they are now owned by the same person(s) and operated as 2 entities.

I am currently working on determining the correct color and debris level for the floor of the Open Hearth.
Anybody ever work in one?

Updated 8/04/2022:
- I determined the correct color of Pouring Floor from speaking with a few folks I know that worked in an Open Hearth. That will be dark with lots of scale and slag. The color of the Charging Floor is still TBD. I am leaning towards a chalky gray with lots of spilled additives of various colors.
- In preparation for laying out the Pouring Floor, I drew up a plan for a floor template (jig).
- Doing that got me to revisit the floor plan for the entire mill. All the columns attach to model's wooden base. They poke through the floors, which are raised at various levels. For example, the Pouring Floor sits 1/4" above the wooden base so as to hide the ties of the pouring track. That means positioning of the columns has to be precise.
- That prompted a general clean-up and re-organizing of the Microsoft Visio file for the plan. It's about 20 pages and covers everything - roof trusses, outer columns, inner columns, intermediate (minor) columns, oven design, and mill floor plan. I went through and made sure all dimensions (where they appear on multiple pages) were consistent.
- To make sure I was absolutely dead-on, I converted some pages (specifically the Floor Plan) to full-size drawings (1" = 1").
- One of the outcomes of all this was the discovery that I still needed to make 2 half-sized inner columns. That's the one on the extreme right.
-
- Today I went to Hobby Express and picked up the necessary Plastruct for these columns. I also picked up Plastruct stairs and railings for the observation platform that will go along the outer wall on the Pouring Floor.

Updated 08/05/2022: OK, so finally all the major columns have been constructed and painted. There will also be 14 minor columns, but they are simple, single "H" beams. Tomorrow I will try to start the floor jig (template) and maybe start painting part of the floor. More when I know it.

Updated 8/9/2022:
Here's a little teaser of a photo. This is the Weirton Steel Open Hearth build in progress. All the items you see except the track and the 1x2s being used to elevate the charging floor are temporary - test-fitted only. I am measuring and re-checking the positions of the mid-line columns as they will determine the overall precision of the model.
More when I know it.

Start? Well, I know it doesn't look like much is done, but a lot of effort is represented by that photo. I would say I am probably 1/3rd of the way through the project. The completed roof trusses and columns have just under 1,000 parts. The shells of the ovens are done and all 4 have their innards. The Arduino program is about 1,300 lines of code. So there is more done than actually meets the eye.

I meant the start of the assembly, not the start of the project, but I didn’t make that clear in my post. I know you’ve done a lot of work to get to this point. My fault for not being clear.

Joe,
I certainly wasn't upset by what you said. It does look like very little has actually been accomplished - even to me.
