I used to go to local auctions all the time and usually could get some bargains. Lately the prices seem way out of line especially on Ebay.
If you like to make purchases on auction sites do you think the prices are fair. Now I know there may be many factors if an item is rare or hard to get but I’m talking about product produced in the hundreds if not thousands.

The only auction site I use (sparingly) is ebay. I find most stuff is high but every once in a while, find a bargain. I used to sell a lot on ebay, but the fees got out of control. Thus the high prices.
I would much rather buy used from the forums or a site like Trainz.

I have items that I bought about a year or ago that now are now selling for 33% to over 50% more than I paid. Now days you have to get lucky or really want something very badly. ( on eBay my only avenue for my situation ) Even trainz you have to watch. They been cranking there prices also.

In my opinion the ending bids on auction sites like Stout and Cabin Fever are way too high considering the added cost of a buyer's premium and every possible shipping/handling fee they can think of! I really think bidders don't take those fees into consideration.

Shipping expenses continue to rise from UPS, FedEx, and USPS, it is now a yearly occurrence for the price increases. Factoring the shipping charges and the buyers premium usually results in a no bid from me.

I really think bidders don't take those fees into consideration. I’m fortunate to be able to pick up from Cabin Fever. I do take into account their 16% buyers premium and tax. I looked at some items on Stout but was turned off by not just the fees but shipping cost that you don’t get until you are the winning bid.

I would rather buy from members, but we don't have that many items I seek for sale here. E Bay I have checked out and there are few bargains anymore and as stated many that do look good have outrageous shipping charges and then add sales Tax to buyers outlay. But, people pay those prices and it just makes more sellers think their items are worth that or more. My lists of wants are small, not needs, just wants.

I have picked up a few things from eBay over the years but not much any more. Auctions I never participated in, it just not my thing. I have many things from TrainZ and shows like Allentown, York and a few others. Although the amount of shows are less than they were 15-20 years ago. Besides I have more then enough to enjoy.

Just got a good bargain off ebay. I think it depends on what you're looking for.

Prices are high on eBay these days because after all of the fees charged on each sale, sellers have to price it artificially high in order to make enough profit to even make it worth the effort of listing, packaging, and shipping.
For the most part, the high prices are not from greedy sellers. They are just trying/hoping to make enough to make it all worth it.

I believe that you were at the Allentown First Frost meet as I was. Don't know if it was just myself but I came across many good deals there especially on NOS and lightly used equipment. Some dealers there will often bargain with you on price. As for eBay, I'll rate them up and down. I have purchased quite a few trains on ebay and got some good deals over the years same with Allentown. The key is to keep looking for the item at the price you wish to pay.

FYI: I recently sold 2 diecast tractors on Ebay as 1 auction for $20.00. The shipping was $14.67. The taxes that ebay collected were $2.51. So, the buyer paid $37.18. Ebay charges their 13.25% on that total ($37.18) plus a .40 fee, not the total that I sold it for ($20.00), which is $5.33 in commission and fees. I got paid out $20.00 - $5.33 for a total of $14.67. So in my view, I paid 26.65%, not 13.25% for this auction.

I have found that I get better deals from Cabin fever then I do from Stout. Stout is really high end stuff. (Don't forget 141 days till TCA YORK.)
