Lionel now has a Make Your Own set option. You select your own locomotive, rolling stock, power supply, track and accessory. In general I like the idea and think it has potential. However, your choices are limited to basic starter set level components. I was also surprised how quickly it added up. But I think it should be open to premium sets. For example, you are coming intot he hobby and you want all you need to start but don't want a starter set. You could buy the AEC set for example and select a track pack and basic power at a discount. Or build sets with scale locomotives and scale cars Anyway, play around with it if you like and see what you come up with myos.lionel.com/

My thought on this, They do it this way to get more out of a starter set ( also known as greed ) When they make a set the control the cost and get let it go cheaper as they will make a couple thousand at a time, what you get here is a handpicked set, So yes it cost a little more but shouldn't bring the cost up much, seeing how little people in Chine have a very low pay scale or they say they do.

Well, the concept of being able to pick the items you want to be included in your set is certainly a good one.
One of the chronic complaints about just about every "bundled" product or service is the amount of dross typically thrown in with the treasures you really opened your wallet to get, and even with a limited selection, being able to pick your own "best of" grouping can be a powerful consumer incentive if done right. I would expect them to charge some price premium for the service (over the off-the-shelf sets), but I suspect the per-item cost will still be much better than trying to assemble your "dream consist" strictly from the a la carte menu. If it works for the starter sets, I suspect you'll see the option offered with the premium stuff before too long . . .

I don’t know. I’ve been creating my own sets for the last 40 years!

I went to the web site and built a set with the product offered to build my set and once completed it was no bargain, price wise. Product offered to build the set would not have been on my must have list.

I don’t know. I’ve been creating my own sets for the last 40 years! Yeah, but what have you had to pay for such 'sets', doing it item by item?

Here is my "Make My Own Set" Plan: One LIRR C420 Hign nose in Dashing Dan/Worlds Fair colors. Five LIRR Passenger cars with Dashing Dan/Worlds Fair colors. No Track No Transformer. Doubt they would do this as they seem to be content with releasing same trains over and over with just different colors or themes. Anything above the norm costs at least $1500 or more.

Because I could pick and choose what I want in my own time. Plus, I could make several different sets for one locomotive. I’m certainly not lacking for trains. The cost? It’s an investment in a lifetime of happiness!

( I swore 3 or 4 times that's it) But really what happened after my 3rd or 4 set. And I actually added another shelf on all 3 sides and probably before moving had just as much under the layout I built. and here is what I have now in Standard gauge, I still have some of the O but because this house has a smaller train room, I sod about 90% of that. here is most of the O I still have now and some of my standard gauge Here is opposite wall from first two pics.

I don’t know. I’ve been creating my own sets for the last 40 years! Here is a "Make My Own Set" by Ron, favorite. My absolute favorite engine and cars to pull. Start watching at 3:01 to see them run dead rail using Blunami.

I have been building my own sets since 1972 when I got my first locomotive, A Lionel U36b. Still in 2024 I'm doing something similar. I like unit trains like flat cars loaded with military equipment, a solid block of 40' box cars, container train, etc.
