We need not worry about York or the bandit meets. There are still numerous options left to purchase O gauge trains. There is eBay, online auctions, and a few large train shows like Greenberg's and Allentown. Plenty of places remain to get bargains.

I go to the Springfield MA show and it is huge. I don't think I am missing anything not going to York.

Guess I'm lucky I live close to both Allentown and York. Although I may miss both if my medical issues don't get better. We shall see if i can attend my 80th straight York and god only knows how many Allentown shows.

But some of those dealers did not sell at the shows and now do not attend. I’m guessing from some of the comments that dealer and manufacturer are one and the same but they are not. Lionel, MTH, Atlas, Bachmann and many other manufacturers attended the York meets with large displays. They did not sell anything except in later years MTH sold parts and refurbished engines. Many of them no longer attend or if they do their displays are greatly reduced in size.
The dealers on the other hand like Trainworld, Nicholas Smith, and others either no longer attend or only in October or in the case of Trainworld they don’t bring anything to sell or if they do they leave early. Let’s face it the ED York meet is a shadow of its former self and I don’t think anything they might do would change that. Like many others I long for the days when you had so many people that it was hard to get through some of the halls. Just a clarification. MTH DID sell product at the train shows for sure. They got enough of my money at their booth. Also Yes I was referring to Lionel which also sold a limited number of cars that were made special. I heard more complaints than people saying they enjoyed the car. Seems like you had to be the first 50 or you missed.

Early 2000's when if you didn't make your hotel reservations a year in advance you were traveling 45-60 minutes outside York just to attend everyday. Now it's easy to get a room even during the week of.
York is a giant swap meet, back to its roots. It is what it is.
That was the case back then. But since then a large number of new hotels were built all around York, so it’s easy to get a place to stay. Even when I lived an hour away, and now out of the area, I was able to get a hotel room only two weeks before the Meet as far back as the late 1990’s.

I go to the Springfield MA show and it is huge. I don't think I am missing anything not going to York. It depends on your motives, especially if you haven’t been to the York Meet. I haven’t been to Springfield but from what I’ve heard over the years it’s mostly layouts and smaller gauges for sale. The York Meet has a large selection of O gauge for sale in five or six large warehouse buildings.
If you’re really interested in O gauge trains the York Meet is a must see. Not to mention the after parties.
I still need to get to Springfield though. I had plans to drive up there from Philly several years ago but a heavy snowfall the day before leaving ended that trek. Now it’s a bit more difficult to make several trips back east every year. But one day I’ll get there!

The group that runs the Springfield show added another larger gauge show later in the year, like April timeframe. Much more O gauge there. These shows occupy 4 large buildings.
The fairgrounds where these are held is very large and also is used for the Big E expo which is on right now.
I have no way to compare this to York but like I said, I don’t feel like I’m missing out.

Having done both. York even today is an experience to behold. But with that said, just like the dealers, I can’t justify the 12 hour round trip, hotel, gas, food, and the trains. The money I save not going I can purchase a new engine. The two shows in west Springfield are more than enough for me at this stage of the hobby.

Gary, The reason that the TCA eastern division opened the purple hall on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday was not to kill the bandit meets, it was to make more money for the ED. They rent the fairgrounds all week. it was a great idea someone came up with.

Gary, I just want to add, you have to be a TCA member to set up in the purple hall Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday.

Brian, You would be wasting your time going 3,000 miles to the Springfield show. Yes yes Eddie, no post war or pre war trains for you in Springfield, the people that attend really don't know what that stuff is anyway. Plus, lets not forget the Amherst show is the biggest show on the east coast.
